Apologies for reviving this thread which I started last November, but the stupidity of the Duckworth-Lewis nonsense has reared its ugly head again at the conclusion of the first ODI in the West Indies.
This mystical method consists of mathematical calculations which are intended to take account of the mindset of teams whose innings are interrupted by climatic conditions.
In today's match, England batted through their entitlement of 50 overs and their run-rate per over was 5.40. West Indies batted for 46.2 overs at a run-rate of 5.26 and the interruption occurred at the end of their innings, which makes it difficult to see how their approach to the pace of their innings could have been in any way different.
After a ludicrous display of coaches and officials running around brandishing charts containing a plethora of possible equations, it was ruled that England had won by one run.
Absolute nonsense. England won by superior run rate, and this is the basis on which the results of these games should be decided. If teams cannot bat in a way which ensures that they are always ahead of their opponents' run-rate, then they have only themselves to blame if they lose.
The sooner this Duckworth-Lewis nonsense is discarded, the better.
