I think the essence of all this "did we play this system or that system" is that in his second season (and taking on board lessons learned from last season) the manager has built a squad FULL of quality rather than a squad of quality bolstered by youthful potential.
Surely Elliott Benyon is starting to cross that threshold from potential to quality, whilst Stephens and Caryol are gradually developing a more rounded portfolio on which the manager can draw.
This has given him the option of changing the system to either counter or throw the opposition. For instance what did the watching Brian Carey learn from being at FGR on Tuesday? Not a lot I would venture. Garry Hill of R&D was there yesterday, will we play that way at Nene Park in 2 weeks time (can't wait for that one)? He doesn't really know does he!
I think the accepted formation of a 5 man defence is really a flat back four with a sweeper behind...............1-4 if you like whilst what we played yesterday sounded more like a 3-4-3; back three of Robertson, Woods and Hodges sitting centrally behind wing backs Mansell and Nicholson with Wroe and Hargreaves sitting behind an interchanging and peeling off Benyon? Dsane,Sills and Green.
God, it sounds complicated doesn't it? That's why so many lower league managers stick to 4-4-2 as it requires less thinking from the players when they are under pressure out there on the pitch, and hence are less liable to error.
So does Garry Hill prepare for us playing one up front (as at Cambridge) two up front (as at home to Eastbourne) one with one "in the hole" (as at FGR) or three (as yesterday)?
To think all those detractors wanted "Buckle Out" just a fortnight or so ago.....................ridiculous weren't they Dave Shaw!
