Before the game, Paul Buckle said it was vital that his wingers/wide midfielders stayed wide when attacking and closed up when Kiddy were on the offensive.
For the first 20 minutes Wayne Carlisle stood out head and shoulders above the rest of the players on the park, Kiddy included, but then what happened - WE STARVED HIM OF THE BALL!
It beggared belief after that - he barely touched the ball and EVERY time Hodges got it he gave it away. When we finally brought on a winger, who apparently had been unwell, we started to look more dangerous again down the left - had we managed to make the right move earlier on, which was Benyon for Sills, and brought on both Carayol and Stevens for the starved wide midfielders, and then forced the ineffective central midfielders to look wide, we might have had a chance.
But we lack confidence completely now, all over the team, and as sad as I am to say it, Paul Buckle is a dead man walking if we fail to beat Northwich on Sunday...even a draw wouldn't be good enough and you can guarantee the boo-boys would be out in force; probably about 450 of the 1350 who bother to turn up after yet another startlingly ineffective performance on Setanta.
Sadly Lee Hodges appeared to be showing his age tonight, and I would fully expect him to stand aside on Sunday unless he reverts to left-back because the Hodges/Nicholson combo certainly didn't work tonight, with maybe Carayol and Stevens both given a start. Brough, Wroe and Thompson will all be fighting to start in the middle of midfield and it would be no surprise to see Mansell back at right-back.
At least Matt Green looked a little hungrier when he came on tonight and Benyon made an impression. What price seven changes on Sunday and Ashley Yeoman on the bench??
And now it's time for a random word in bold typeface just to satisfy Merse!
