Seem to recall standing on the terracing beneath the grandstand for the Pompey game when in marched a group decked out in army gear and sporting balaclavas. They stood to attention near me for a while surveying the ground and looking pretty intimidating. Then they marched off without saying a word. I assumed they were Pompey. The HE had been full of warnings of a Pompey invasion and trouble which I think kept the gate down a bit.

Two purchases from the original Gulls Shop of long ago: I was only looking at this same badge in my collection last week. It has pride of place amongst basketball badges from many international countries.

And we remained gold in the Playfair annuals of the 1960s as well as the first two editions of Rothmans (70/71 and 71/72).... .....but yellow by the time of the third edition published in 1972. So we changed from gold to yellow in 1972 in a blatant disregard for the club's heritage. Bloody Bateson!

We could've murdered the Herald for putting out that info... If I remember it was a morning of crossed fingers for Shaun and myself, conversations amongst our parents, 'do we or do we not let them go', pleading from ourselves, promises to stand in the enclosure where it would be safe, no wearing of colours... Finally at the eleventh hour they agreed and off we went in his parents car with our Parkas on. Of course once we arrived at the ground it was off to the Pop side, scarves out of pockets... and the rest is history!
