I see that tonight Crewe are attempting to overcome a two goal deficit from the first leg of their play off. Yes, BBC give us a mention because Preston did just that against us at the old plastic Deepdale in that infamous match that was swung against us by a cheat in getting Darren Moore sent off.
I still can't forget how we were robbed that night.

I still can't forget how we were robbed that night. My daughter has just got married to a Preston fan. His uncle turned up in a car with a personalised PNE number plate. My speech was along the lines of “Thirty years ago you b*stards stole promotion off me and now you’re trying to steal my daughter from me”. I tried to keep the mood light and humorous but I think it might have been possible to detect an underlying genuine bitterness.

Video below for any younger readers who will not comprehend the scale of the robbery.
Thug team. Thug manager. Thug assistant manager. Thug fans. Dodgy ref. Dodgy plastic pitch.
Bitter? Me?

I was there. 30 years have flown.
Sand down the channels to hold the punted balls up for Ainsworth and the other very good winger who went on to have a good career - Everton, I think. We created a great atmosphere down that side, but wasn’t to be. If only away goals had counted ‘double’ after 90 minutes, eh. Impressed with Bayes managing to get through the mob to acknowledge us at the end.
Obviously wasn’t the last time the bastard Raynor put the hex on us, either. Swansea, that night, Orient and Crawley. Hard to think of anyone who so encapsulates ‘hated player’. The panto season with Ben Gerring chanting ‘we hate Torquay’ culminating in his sending off at Woking (thanks, Ben - one of our own) doesn’t come anywhere near it on any level.
Stayed with a Uni mate PNE fan and went to the pub after. Ordered a bottle of Beck’s at the bar and told “had to be that tonight, mate”. I sort of raised a smile, but wished I’d ordered something else. Abiding memory of PNE fans carrying rolls of ‘turf’ under their arms on the way out. A nice few days away. Spoilt only by the football.

I was on a family holiday in Corfu when this match was played and coincidentally we're going back again for the second time in just a few weeks time. It was absolute torture not knowing the result for a day or so. No mobile phones or instant internet communication back then. Had to wait for the English newspapers to go on sale a day or even longer out of date and then shocked at how the game panned out and then the short period of misery, anger, frustration and disappointment kicks in.... Holiday was great though.

I was working for the GPO at the time and was starting at stupid o clock the following morning so i gave this game a miss. I do remember listening to the game on Radio Devon or maybe Devon Air at the time. The commentary was fantastic and really painted a picture and captured the atmosphere. I seem to remember an ex Everton manager part of the commentary team that evening....maybe Gordon Lee or Howard Kendall ? My younger self would have thought that 30 years later todays commentarys would be at least as good if not better.... unfortunately thats not always the case these days imo.
