The Lionesses begin their World Cup campaign against Haiti at 10:30 AM on 22nd July. Quite a few changes since their win in the Euro's last year due to a combination of retirements and injuries and there is a bit about the new players coming in HERE

link - a study from Durham University showing how media coverage increased for the women’s side of the game between the 2015 and 2019 world cups. There will be another massive increase in this tournament particularly after the successful Euro campaign for the Lionesses a year ago.

A tight 1-0 win today courtesy of a retaken penalty against a spirited Haiti side that could have quite easily equalised. England were certainly well blow their fluent best today but do have time to now grow into the tournament and at the end of the day started the Euros with a 1-0 win against Austria.

Following another tight 1-0 win over Denmark, England upped their game drastically with a 6-1 thrashing of China. Changed to a 3–5–2 formation which seemed to do the trick. I was able to watch part of the game over lunch and seemed to be a very entertaining match with China lucky that England only got six! I think they now play Nigeria on Monday morning in the group of 16 stage for a place in the quarter-finals. Highlights below - some of you may even unexpectedly enjoy it

link - England lineup is out with Walsh starting! There’s been a few shocks over the weekend with USA going out so just need to look after our own games.

Even that was in doubt after Georgia Stanway hit the first penalty wide. Controversially, earlier in the match, after the ref gave a penalty it was overturned by VAR despite there being clear contact and a push in the box. What is clear is that the rest of the world are catching up with the established nations even more so in the women's game and it will be interesting to see how this pans out as the game continues to develop.

England got through but by the skin of their teeth having gone down to 10 and needing to win a penalty shootout. I'm going to respectfully disagree with you, and the BBC, in saying that England were fortunate to get through ("Daylight robbery" to quote BBC). Yes, our passing was poor. Yes, our movement was poor. Lauren James was marked out of the game so effectively that there was barely any difference once she had been sent off. But we did make some chances and I felt that if Alessia Russo had taken two steps forward in the first half her shot would have had a significantly better chance of beating Nnadozie. Nnadozie made some very good saves, whereas Mary Earps was rarely troubled. That was because, in my humble opinion, we defended very well; keeping the Nigerian forwards away from the penalty area and packing it full when they did get closer. We had twice as many shots on target as they did. Yet the BBC chose to concentrate on a great shot by Ashleigh Plumptre that Earps had covered and the general movement and speed of the Nigerian team. I am as confused by the penalty decision as you are. We know (or should do by now!) that contact is not enough: there has to be clear consequence of that contact yet I thought that was demonstrated by Rachel Daly being bundled over. It is possible that the ref thought her fall was a bit too premeditated, and I would disagree with that as the defender, Rasheedat Ajibade, ran into the back of her. However, the ref had enough replays to watch, while talking to the VAR room, so that she must have been convinced that Daly's fall was not as a consequence of Ajibade's foul. Strange. I'm certainly not going to pretend that we were anything other than disappointing, but defending is a skill and we played well enough to win the game, even if we missed the chances we created and needed penalties to progress. I agree about some of the less-developed nations progressing. Nigerian players are regulars in the NWSL, Spain and France with clubs such as Barcelona, Saint Etienne, Benfica and NY/NJ Gotham. Plumptre had played in the WSL last season for Leicester and won't be short of offers for next season. It was one of the things I heard Emma Hayes say: that the number of players from European Leagues has improved the standard of a lot of nations, with China and the US being left behind by their relative insularity. Big game on Saturday morning!!

I would actually agree with your analysis that England weren’t fortunate to get through. Down to 10 on the pitch they earnt the right to get through to the penalty stage without too much difficulty where their recent experiences undoubtedly help them. Meanwhile, Lauren James has got away with a 2 match ban, possibly helped by a lack of force when she trod on the Nigerian player and the potential impact on missing out on the World Cup final - linklink - like you, looking forward to seeing England play in the last of the quarter-finals at 11:30 tomorrow morning.

And then there is the Dutch being awarded a penalty against Spain that was rescinded, and it looked very similar to the English one. So I can understand that with them both being very similar the end result (both being overturned) is consistent.
While Japan get a penalty for Riko Ueki tripping over her own feet, with no Swedish defender touching her, and VAR let it go. Very strange...
