I came away today feeling pretty flat. We did not do enough to win after an excellent opening 20 minutes or so when we led 1-0. That early promise gradually faded and in the second half as Scunthorpe took the initiative and on clear chances should have won. That is the stark reality I am afraid. Scunthorpe equalised early in the second half with their first meaningful shot at goal. We were carved open too easily in the second half as Scunthorpe got their game together. There were some low-key boos at the final whistle from the Popside and chants of "we want Osbourne out". The natives are starting to get restless!
Martin scored an excellent early goal showing everyone what a bit of pace can do. Martin ran with the ball at Scunthorpe, did a one-two and got clear and slotted the ball past their keeper. It was a lovely piece of quality from Martin and Torquay were in control of the game. The good news was that Torquay looked more cohesive and played better quality football compared to when I last saw them against Boreham Wood. There seemed to be a better spine to the team with Moxey back in defence, Lapsie backi in midfield and Jarvis doing a very good job as centre forward in a similar way to Danny Wright but also has a bit of pace. Jarvis was through in the first half but their keeper saved with his legs. Torquay were good value for their lead but as the first half wore on Torquay's attacks gradually faded.
Scunthorpe's goal came from a blocked shot that spun in the air and fell to a player clear on goal to volley in. I was disappointed how easily Scunthorpe carved us open in the second half and they really should have put the game to bed. Halstead continued his impressive form today and saved a shot but then needed a last-ditch goal line clearance to save Torquay. Halstead tipped another shot on to the post. In added time Halstead produced an outstanding reflex save at point black to tip the ball over. You could say that Halstead earned us a point today for that alone. Torquay did come back into the game in the second half after the equaliser and the game became quite even. A Moxey low cross could not quite find a Torquay boot to poke home. Goodwin had a decent long-range effort parried. But the real clear chances in the second half fell to Scunthorpe and that is the worry.
We played better today with a better shape and tried to get it down and played some decent football at times so it was a small step in the right direction. But sadly it is still not good enough and one look at our bench today did not have anyone to change the game. There was not even a striker on the bench and no game changer like someone who has a bit of pace and can stretch the opposition. Again, we only played well in parts of the game and there were times when our defence was hanging on or our attacks just broke down. There is still significant improvement needed if we are to avoid relegation.
Wyatt replaced Crowe at half time and did a very good job at right wing back I thought. I really like Jarvis as a good old centre forward and players like Goodwin and Smith showed some good flashes here and there. Evens was voted sponsors MOTM. Torquay tried to play the ball out from the back with short goal kicks which ran into trouble at times. Our passing moves were decent at times but too many moves broke down at vital moments and we no longer possess someone like Little, Lemonheigh-Evans or Reid who can produce a bit of magic to hurt the opposition and give them something different to think about.
