I don’t have the same issue with the ticketing system that a lot of people seem to have. You can buy a ticket up to 15 minutes before the game so it rather does eliminate the need for any extra equipment to be needed at each turnstile.
How many people are really going to make the decision that late in the day to attend? If they don’t think they are going at 2:45pm then I doubt there are many who will from that point, change their mind and decide they are.
We are used to booking in advance to go to see other events: concerts, cinema, theatre (if you’re that posh), even Exeter Chiefs, so it really is for just a few dinosaurs that we are probably worrying about here. The average attendance is not any lower than I would imagine it to be for a team that is utter garbage at the moment - in fact a good five or six hundred more than when we were relegated from this league previously so I don’t really think it’s the issue it’s being made out to be.
I did suggest earlier in the season that the club should advertise the additional £2 for tickets bought on match day as “save £2 if bought before the day of the game” and whilst I won’t pretend they got the idea from me, they did start doing that, and again, an early bird price is not unusual in all manner of things, including the club’s season-ticket.
I don’t know how many people are not going because they can’t pay cash but I doubt it’s many and if they are staying away because of that then they need to get with times.
For the club to have to start accepting cash again, it would create a whole range of issues which Jon has highlighted above but for me, there are much bigger things to worry about at the club than this issue.
To be fair to the club, there are some very decent people who work there who go out of their way to help supporters. They were brilliant sorting my dad out when he could no longer stand on the Pop Side and transferred his season ticket to a seated alternative complete with a ticket for a carer so I’m sure if there were some supporters with real issues around tickets, someone there would help them.
