The injury to Omar showed we are a bit light in central defence and wouldn’t be surprised to see a loanee fill that gap, preferably of the quality of Sherring. Squad number 6 has been left free which suggests that Johnson already has this position earmarked for someone specific.

What's with Ali Omar and those celebratory clinches as though he has just met a long lost brother?

Squad number 6 has been left free which suggests that Johnson already has this position earmarked for someone specific. I don't believe that there was a number 5 during the whole of last season, so what you say about number 6 may not happen. Ever since squad numbering was introduced, I have wondered why the numbers are so widespread. Last season they went up to 35 (Umerah), but there were gaps in the teens and twenties. I can recall one player who was on loan about 10 years ago who wore number 51. It would be much tidier if the numbers were consecutive and more sensible numbers were issued to those previously outside the first 11 (e.g. Moxey 21 to 3 and Lewis 31 to 6). It begs the question, who decides on these numbers? Do players choose them themselves? I appreciate that my years as a supporter date back to the days when the match day numbers were 1 to 14 (actually long, long before that) and there were no names on shirts. Does anyone actually buy these any longer? When watching a match, you knew that number 3 was the left back and number 7 probably the right winger, for both teams. I find the current numbering system not only messy and illogical, but also, dare I say it, rather silly. You have to move with the times, I'm sure some people will say. Well, I'm trying, but for someone whose favourite player is still Sam Collins, it's difficult!!

I don't believe that there was a number 5 during the whole of last season Fraser Kerr! . I can recall one player who was on loan about 10 years ago who wore number 51. Was there? Only two I can find with numbers over 40 were 41 Lloyd Macklin and 50 Sam Cox - both in 2009/10.

Gamble on Notts, Stockport, Wrexham etc- when success doesn't come and the supporters get despondent it could ultimately cost them their club. I think we are probably more out of our depth financially than those three clubs. All three have bigger fan bases than ours. Massively so in the case of Notts County. They may all be spending more than they can sensibly afford but so are we!

I find the current numbering system not only messy and illogical, but also, dare I say it, rather silly. I genuinely see your point: there seems to be a number 99 for every team in the Champions/Europa League (although I may be exaggerating a touch ) and that cannot be right! I'm sure there used to be a rule that the numbers 1-25 should be allocated before using any higher numbers, but I can't find any evidence of that in the FA Rulebook or in the IFAB Laws of the Game, so perhaps the regulation restricting which numbers are used has been removed. Jon has already pointed out Fraser Kerr as number 5 last season, in fact there was a player allocated for every number between 1 and 35 except for 13 (and I don't know why that superstition persists in the 2020s) and 30. Louis Britton and Scott Boden both wore 19. Marcin Brzozowski and Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka both wore 28 so surely either Boden or Kimpioka could have taken 30. As for the old days of numbers reflecting position, the problem with allocating 7 for right-wing or 10 for inside left is that a lot of teams don't use those formations anymore. Even then, Bobby Charlton wasn't a centre-forward in 1966. If anything he was the classic "Number 10" playing at the front of a midfield diamond. Is Trent Alexander-Arnold a right-back, a right-wing-back or a right winger? Many would say the former but as his attacking is better than his defending then perhaps it is wing back. On the other hand, with Liverpool attacking with five forwards (including TAA and Robertson) then maybe he is a right winger. I would like to see something like the NFL uses where (for example) numbers 2-9 are defenders, 10-19 are midfield and 20-29 are forwards. Where that would leave Kyle Cameron against Notts County last season would be a problem for someone else to resolve!

Rugby Union is similar to your NFL example Rags. 1 to 8 is the forwards (scrum), 10 to 14 the defence, 9 is the link between the defence and forwards (scrum half), and 15 is the full back. Not only that each number is a specific position in the forwards or defence. Used to be the same in football yonks back before the King died. Makes it easy to see if somebody is out of position! 😉🏉

Hello all, Chester FC supporter here. I’m currently on a week-long holiday in Torquay so I went on a groundhop to your game on Saturday, in what was my second visit to Plainmoor having attended the 1-1 fixture between Torquay and Chester in September 2017. I have compiled a match vlog which shows all of the goals plus much more, so feel free to watch if you wish:
I will also be attending the AFC Bournemouth Under-23 match later on so check out for another vlog on that encounter too! Best of luck to you for the upcoming season. Thanks, Rio Doherty.
