Surely CLE would be an unlikely signing?? Not saying he would not be welcome though!

Surely CLE would be an unlikely signing?? Not saying he would not be welcome though! Well, we now know an attacking midfielder is coming in but most of this speculation comes from Jake Andrews - look who’s back social media posts. Many thought he would be loaned to a league club last season but he insisted on coming here! That’s the sort of player we like!

Would be a fantastic capture either as permanent or loan. If the former, am thinking we are building a very competitive squad beyond this season. If other rumours are true, Warren would be solid (but perhaps not to be overused) defender and Martin would be a very strong contender to partner Cameron.

Warren would be solid (but perhaps not to be overused) defender and Martin would be a very strong contender to partner Cameron. With Aaron Martin’s unexpected release from Exeter City there has been a bit of speculation about him. When I saw our pre-season game against Exeter a year ago I was very impressed with their defensive unit and he was one of the main reasons for this. Of course, he had played under Johnson before, six years ago at Yeovil when they were in league one. Would be a coup to sign him but more in hope than expectation. Funny enough, when it comes to Warren and if he is signed and then not over using him, Johnson has talked about the possibility of the league keeping the 5 substitutes rule for this shorter season and would give the option to rotate defenders as well during the game.

Andrew Nelson a name nobody expected and not surprised as the Johnson partnership always do their homework on possible targets. This one looks like a bit of a coup for us but I would guess the early offer of a firm two year contract and virtually guaranteed regular football may have played a big part. Surely a player they had their eye on for a long while. GJ is very persuasive as well and ambitious players will always listen to ambitious managers. Danny Wright signing was far a more obvious move for us. The type of player we haven't had in recent years and adds another dimension to our game though as always there's the danger that our short quick passing game could revert to more long ball if things aren't going well in games but I'm certain GJ will be very aware of the dangers. If we can play and attack with a mix of both systems that can't be a bad thing. Be interesting to see who the other three are and not convinced the names mentioned are the ones who will arrive. No mention of a conventional wide player as yet maybe with the system we intend to play, with both wing backs pushing on, a Kalala type is not on the list. The five sub thing is sure to work in favor of the bigger clubs, including ourselves as I feel many of the part timers will have pretty trim squads with young players padding out squads next season. Interesting times and GJ sounds convinced he has all of the tools to make a serious challenge. Interesting Dundee fans forum thread here. www.thedarkblues.co.uk/topic/22883-nelson/page/14/#commentsCertainly highly rated by some though a loss of form after an injury after celebrating a goal puts a little dampener on a few posts.

Thanks for the link Pete, yep, seems to have lost his way after a promising start but Johnson certainly seems to think he can get him back up to and then improve on where he was and a fresh start is probably what he needs. If he was the finished article then he wouldn’t be coming here i am afraid but going somewhere a few leagues higher.

Not sure what to think about Pete's link. You've got a 14 page thread that is supposedly dedicated to Nelson but it seems to go off topic very quickly, seems they're not really bothered he is going (I certainly hope the rumour about cocaine is just a rumour). So was he injured over celebrating a goal on a plastic pitch or did he injure himself while drunk? What we seem to have got is a young player with potential who needs to reboot his career, I hope he is committed to making that change. On the plus side we have seen how Jamie Reid was completely reborn under Gary Johnson's stewardship, but I'm praying that Johnson's judgement has improved since he plumped for Manny Duka last season. I think Nelson is in for a difficult time; he won't replace Reid simply because Reid was a total one off at this level and I hope the fans don't take out their frustration on Nelson and give him a chance.

link - And the two new central defenders are Gary Warren as expected and Fraser Kerr, coming from Hartlepool.

We know about Gary Warren so looking at Fraser, he has a lot of experience and is our only outfield player between 25 and 30. Some mixed reviews at Hartlepool but he was a consistent starter and had a good reputation at Gateshead where he was before. Also has a lot of experience in the SPL with Motherwell so looking forward to seeing him in Yellow where Johnson and Downes can get the best out of him.
Attacking midfielder is hoped to be announced tomorrow but he is still under contract elsewhere so this is not guaranteed but still think likely to be CLE.
Gary Warren played very well for us back in January and think he is likely to lead the back line a bit like Branston and the other two are likely to fight it out to join him unless we play three at the back that GJ mentioned in passing although may not suit us unless we have injuries to cover.

In interview GJ was hinting playing with three central defenders. The system gives the wing backs much more freedom to go forward and add another big tall bodies at set pieces so I understand his thinking and why FK, Warren and Cameron may all get regular starts if it works well. Alternatively Kerr would be decent cover as I believe Warren and Cameron would likely be be first choice in a back four.
With another attacking midfield arrival about to be named, expected to be CLE the midfield selection is going to be ultra competitive. Not even sure who my first choice would be particularly if it is CLE named later today. The high energy game GJ wants us to play will rely on young fit legs in the main with Asa Hall the steady old head in midfield. So midfield choices look particularly good with Buse , Andrews, Hall CLE? and a fit again Armani Little competing for places Whitfield and Nemane vying for the forward mid place. Wright and Nelson to play together up top? - undoubtedly. No natural winger/wide man is the only area I see as as lacking though Ben Wynter and Liam Davis will be expected and have the freedom to perform that role in a 5-3-2.
Predicted starting eleven 4- 4 2 Covalan - Davis - Cameron - Warren - Wynter. Little - Hall - CLE? - Whitfield - Wright - Nelson 5-3-2 Covalan - Davis - Cameron- Warren - Kerr - Wynter - Little - Whtfield - CLE - Wright - Nelson. Good mid field players also waiting in the wings in Jake Andrews, Nemane and Buse. All pure speculation of course and may well be completely wrong about CLE -
What are your starting choices and what system do you think will be first choice for GJ?

Not sure the latest prospective signing is going to show today?! Inside Plainmoor was around 9pm on Friday so you never know but as this player is under contract there are more hurdles to jump through so wouldn’t be surprised at a delay.

Concur, GJ was certainly more cautious on this possible signing.

I see Ollie Watkins just scored for Brentford in the Championship play offs. He was born in Torquay, grew up in Newton Abbott and yet signed for Exeter. Hope we do a better job of finding local talent in future.

I was waiting for this new midfielder to be announced, maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, who knows? Think the formation will be horses for courses. You could also play a lone striker with say Little in an advanced midfield role along with Hall and CLE if signed. I would still have Andrews on the left wing or maybe Whitfield if Nemane shows good form on the right. Will be strange going into the season without seeing any pre-season games and getting a feel for the players although we know the majority and not too many new faces.
