An interesting look in this link, at the UK's decision to defer the second dose of vaccines to 12 weeks and give the available doses singly to as many as possible in the vulnerable groups. In the words of 'drugbaron, "What we have is a classic case of decision-making in a data-poor environment". That's so but for me, it's the best decision right now although maybe front line staff in the NHS should get their second dose to the original schedule. Lastly, I enjoyed this para : "It teaches us that we cannot just “follow the science” because that pathway is way too conservative (at least if that means only do things for which there is clear, direct evidence). But at the same time, it does not promote “guessing” – you can clearly distinguish a decision, such as the approval of aducanumab, which is a bad idea, from the adoption of single-dose COVID vaccinations, which is a good idea, despite the lack of definitive proof. This why we should have scientific advisors, but not rely on scientists to make decisions." I agree with that 100% ! drugbaron.com/one-dose-or-two-what-the-debate-about-covid-vaccination-teaches-us-about-science-and-its-limitations/

Thanks for that Pete. Re. "the crap that has infected the kiddies site, which I have quit after receiving some pretty vile abuse for the umpteenth time from a particular poster after challenging his posts on the subject".
Yes I had similar treatment but didn't get the chance to 'quit' - I was blocked after standing up to the vile abuse I received. The trouble is 'Dave' is one of the worst cynics. Incredible stuff there and dangerously irresponsible.
I wonder if these odd bods realise that an anti-mask, anti-distancing, anti-vaxx, anti-anything helpful stance is actually in the worst interests of our beloved TUFC - who need a healthy multitude of Fans through those turnstiles as soon as possible. And let's face it, that's a situation is a long way off at the moment.

Would like to see teachers bumped up the vaccination priority list otherwise how are we to keep schools open? I speak from personal experience with my wife catching it while working in school with no PPE etc. Still with limited taste and smell in what has been a slow and difficult recovery process over the last 3 months. This virus plays Russian roulette with people, a colleague in her mid 20s was hard hit with this while another in her early 60s did not know she even had it!

RJD sorry to hear about your Wife but she'll go on getting better I pray. A good point about Teachers - but front line Nurses and Doctors in the NHS are probably more exposed. Re. vaccine progress UK, EU, USA from a respected Poster elsewhere - "On the one hand, we have the UK who acted early and bought in advance supplies of a variety of vaccines and are well placed with one of the most advanced vaccination systems in the world to administer them quickly. To their credit, the NHS has now administered over 1 million doses - easy to gloss over but actually a fantastic achievement but we are struggling to get hold of supplies of vaccine to keep up. Then we have the US who seem to have plenty of vaccine supplies but are simply unable to get their act together and organise themselves to administer them. Somewhere in between we have Europe who are slightly lagging behind and will hopefully quickly catch up. . . . . . the truth is the World really, really does need as many approved vaccines as quickly as possible. So it would be fantastic if the J&J vax comes along soon and others following on behind". I'd read that the J & J vaccine, which is one injection I believe, could well be approved in the UK in February. Let's hope so.
RJD thanks also for your earlier about the EMA being hoisted out of the UK at exactly the worst moment - I used that elsewhere. ATB

In amongst the dreadful figures of hospitalisations and deaths from this virus, partly as the Christmas and New Year events work through the system, a ray of light in the approval of the Moderna vaccine which may become available for younger age groups in the Spring period.
Hopefully the the number of cases will start to ease off as the effect of lockdown starts to take hold over the next week. Worryingly schools seem to be around half full at the moment which is a vector for keeping the R rate up. Tough on teachers having to teach in the classroom as well as setting on line lessons to those not attending. Good to hear noises about prioritising vaccines for teachers which may be the only way to keep schools open.
Picking up lots of anecdotal evidence of the vaccine becoming available for the population. Spoke to a lady in Tiverton yesterday who has just had her second jab and my in-laws in their mid 70s, up in Somerset get their first jab today as different health authorities make differing rates of progress through the age ranges.
Vaccination does not make you immune as you can still catch it but teaches the body how to fight back and prevent the worse effects including systemic damage to the various organs.
Worth keeping an eye on how the NHS is coping as still think there is a good chance of getting to Plainmoor before the end of the season and a drop in numbers of those with COVID in hospital will be a precursor to the economy including football grounds gradually being opened up again.

I do feel sorry for the British public in all this. You've got a substantial amount people whose starting position even before Covid was to be sceptical as regard to the truthfulness anything Boris Johnson or The Tories told them on any subject. It quickly became clear that the likes of Matt Hancock fell into the same bracket, and was held in equal if not greater contempt than Boris, and I've a feeling that distrust of Government and its surveillance apparatus and motives was why the track & trace app that cost so many millions, crashed and burned. People just weren't convinced that what they were being told it would be exclusively used for, was anywhere near the whole truth. A look on Twitter 15 minutes ago, and is it an unfounded conspiracy theory that the National Broadcaster would try to hoodwink it's viewers and listeners by accidentally on purpose conflating those dying with Covid with those dying of it .... so that you get a much larger figure to present ? Would politicians ever conspire to be less than truthful ? Would they tell you Saddam might send non existent WMD's raining down upon you within 45 minutes ? ....of course they would, and the current breed of politicians are even worse. Thankfully we can be assured that rjdgull would swear on his TUST membership card that he means what he says, and not something else, when he refers to 'deaths from this coronavirus'. But remember that the BBC is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the Government as regards this 'pandemic' and it is imperative that we spot attempts to twist and spin the facts ....that is if you are still attempting to dissect the truth from mainstream media 'news' reporting. Remember, the more they censor, silence and eradicate alternative views and opinions from reaching the public, the freer they will feel to be even more economical with the truth. Safe in the knowledge that those who would take them to task, or point out factual claims that don't stand up to scrutiny, have been gagged. Remain vigilant. As the headlines reveal, Big Brother is no longer just watching you, but being active towards those who might be inclined to utter the 'wrong' opinions. 2021 is already shaping up to suggest that 2020 was child's play compared to what it has in store for us.

Alpine Joe - no doubt we are all in favour of free speech. However, your suggestion of systematic distortion or misinformation surrounding the CV-19 crisis is harmful. I have reported your post. To suggest that there is any sort of conspiracy about presentation of information by the Govt., BBC, or other interests is inaccurate and not helpful. I suggest you direct your fertile mind to the reality of the agony that IS going on.
For example - here's some notes from a Friend, just yesterday, from the front line of the NHS :-
"Guys, vaccination can't come quick enough. In many regions Hospitals can no longer provide mutual support to one another and each day the situation is getting worse with more frightening options being discussed. For the next 3 months simply don't risk your life by going out if not needed. Bulk shop food etc and wipe down with disinfectant anything purchased. Then wipe down the car interior . For the next few months your life is literally in your own hands by the decisions and actions you take .....or choose not to. ...but the safety net of the NHS is fast disintegrating."
Take care of yourself and stay safe if you can . . . . . . .

I suggest you direct your fertile mind to the reality of the agony that IS going on. This is spot on and thanks for highlighting this which is not only in contravention of proboard policy and has no place on this forum but although framed partly as a question is feeding a very dangerous narrative that is contributing to the dire situation we find ourselves in with impacts on all sorts of health issues, the economy and even somewhere very low down in the grand scheme of things getting into a football match. This dying “with Covid” argument is plainly ridiculous as it only goes into the statistics if the death occurs within 28 days of a positive test and there is no way a significant proportion of these people would have died in this timeframe anyway. By the same measure there will be many in intensive care that would have sadly died beyond this 28 day period and consequently not listed in these figures, That’s statistics for you but they are academic, over 32000 in hospital now which has doubled in the last month. We do not want to get into a situation if we can help it where hospitals have to make difficult choices about who to save which may be happening in places anyway now or myself as admin as who to ban.....

Decided not to post this after all, too confrontational. Plenty of time in the weeks to come. Maybe wise, do not mind debate and questioning but there is a school of thought that has constantly downplayed this virus and contributed to the situation we are in today and literally has blood on its hands and needs to be kicked back against. Trying to muddy the waters that people are dying with as opposed to from COVID is seeking to downplay the situation. Just because a small percentage would have died anyway bears no relevance to the overall picture.

stewart Dear Stewart, with the country current in the grips of a deadly pandemic, it is the height of irresponsibility to come out with the assertion that there will be ‘plenty of time in the weeks to come’ for any of us. Have you not seen the latest figures indicating how this deadly virus is ripping through our country, particularly the poor folk of our capital city ? There is a literal race against time to get the population vaccinated, and irresponsible messages that ooze complacency, are the last thing we need at the moment. Sadly therefore, you have left me with no option other than to report your post. And before you get confrontational and suggest I’m just looking to get awarded a gold star from Swatcat, nothing could be farther from the truth. I’m just trying to impress upon you how important it is to reflect that conveying a carefree attitude to the virus is actually dangerous. Refusing to instead signal the imminent danger our unvaccinated citizens may face, helps nobody. Let’s not spread false unsubstantiated hope, at the very time when our Government is working so hard to remind us that ‘plenty of time’ is the one thing that Covid 19 will take away from us, should we neglect to follow all official guidelines. Now a little bird has told me that your now deleted post had virtually nothing to do with the topic of coronavirus, but mainly comprised of an attack on a particular individual. Someone you’ve had in your sights before, they tell me, and who seems to interest you far more than any of the huge range of topics you could turn your mind to instead. I would rather have thought swatcat’s proclamation that ‘no doubt we are all in favour of free speech’ would have been more likely to have caught your eye. That you would wonder how he could possibly have reached that conclusion given the evidence available. With the proof being in the pudding, i.e the very time you come under pressure to deny free speech would be the time to judge whether that ‘favour’ amounts to a hill of beans, or was an empty platitude. However, swatcat tells us, for reasons only known to himself, that there’s ‘no doubt’, So just accept his word … I’ve a feeling he is right on everything. Alternatively, you might have noted I made comment as to the undesirability of information being presented and worded in such a way that could ‘overplay’. Rjd in much more forthright terms, today looks at the other side of the same coin … ‘downplaying’. Both not to be encouraged you’d assume, a warning to be on the lookout for either, equally valid you would have thought ? Seems not , one is totally right and one is totally wrong in the brave new world of the New Normal. And finally on the off chance you were wondering, Stewart, my views on 3 particular topics which may have crossed your mind, are boringly mainstream. The seriousness of the coronavirus strains, particularly for many elderly, or those with existing respiratory problems is something we need to mitigate against. The substantial majority of TUFC fans, whether within Torbay or in the wider area of Devon as a whole will have some idea of TUST but have decided against joining. The majority of Americans voting in the 2016 election decided it was best to elect Donald Trump as President. The number that voted for him in 2020 increased substantially. President Trump’s approval rating among the American public has gone up over the past week. But let’s finish on an optimistic note. For those of us who do err, and slip outside of the constantly restricting bounds of approved opinion, the likelihood that we will be able to benefit from a spell within a Government approved re-education camp so as to enable us to express the correct opinions in future (should we survive Covid) will not only be a blessing in itself, but a likely opportunity to experience swatcat’s instruction firsthand AJ

You still here? What a shame. We all have opinions Jon, some of which make us look good, some which make us look like Plonkers! Your continued tirades against the club owner make you look like a complete Plonker, a complete Arse and a complete Fool. Because anyone with even an ounce of nous knows that without his being there TUFC would cease to exist...and to top it off, we’re top of the division...did you pay for that...no, the owner did. When you go off on one of your weird rants about the owner, we all sit back and think, ‘there goes Jon again, probably the only time he’s been excited in his life.’ We all know that you will quieten down after a while, and it is only your opinion. Best if you keep to the football side...we don’t want you having a heart attack. 🙂
