I think this is the most important pre-season friendly as not only is it against our local rivals but also the last game before the serious stuff begins! Hopefully we will have a crowd similar to that at Plymouth of over 3000 to make for a decent atmosphere.
I would say this has been a decent and successful pre season campaign. Even the injuries to an understaffed defensive back line has shown that the likes of Vincent can play at left back and Wynter in the centre of defence. We still need a central defender to come in and someone like Edwards could free up Keating to challenge a starting place up front although Duku has impressed me more than most.
With the return of Davis next month and some new additions then our sub bench will be transformed and we should have a highly competitive squad. Will Covolan and Niate be fit for this game? Will Buse get a final run out? Johnson will play or start the team most likely to start the following Saturday.

rjdgull A decent and successful pre-season campaign as rjd (now hopefully safely back from Dartmoor) concludes. A severe tanking at the hands of City today would take a bit of the gloss off it, but even in that unlikely event we shouldn't overlook the numerous reasons for optimism. Keeper Covolan doing his back, was unfortunate. No chance so far for him to be staking a claim as a serious challenger to Shaun MacDonald, although I expect the Brazilian to be fit for today's match. Missing most of pre-season for a goalkeeper is probably a little less serious than for an outfield player. Liam Davis again missing out on a proper pre season to build fitness is a disappointment. Up to speed and match fit will be that much more difficult to achieve, and he's a talent that adds so much to our attacking options, and is fairly capable defensively. But the recruitment of Armani & Co all look like useful additions. And there will surely be more. Opposition Manager, Matt Taylor was reported in the regional press over the Summer as saying: 'We are looking at the second and third week of pre-season for trialists. There are a whole load of players that are going to be available and the closer it comes to the start of the season, the more players are getting put to you. As much as I am trying to get my work done on the priority ones, there are areas where I can be patient'And that same basic principle can't be much different for us at the level below. No frantic phone calls from the Johnson brothers, as options for inward loans for the positions currently necessary will, or probably already have, presented themselves for consideration. I've kept an eye on what Matt Taylor has been saying since the end of last season, and one of his goals regarding recruitment of new players for this coming season, was bringing in physically bigger players. I can't remember whether this related to height only, but for all their undoubted stylish football last season, Taylor felt City missed out through not having a few more larger lads. For those lucky enough to attend this afternoon, I wonder if they'll see City field a team of giants...let's hope Armani doesn't get squashed under foot. Gulls old boys Fisher and Bowman could feature in the attack I suppose. Exeter are a good team who would almost definitely have been in with a real shout at promotion if the financial realities of having to sell top scorer Jayden Stockley in January hadn't resulted in a noticeable curtailing of their firepower. Even this Summer, Taylor has revealed that the centre forward he wanted to sign chose a National League club over a move to St.James Park. And not even to one of the bigger names in the National League, according to Taylor. Which gives an indication of some of the financial fire power we're up against. Sticking on that subject, Taylor has also spoken regarding players than have left City since the end of last season. Claiming that they're doubling, trebling, and in some cases quadrupling the wages they were on at City. And with today's newspapers suggesting that Gareth Bale has signed a 'million pound a week and all the noodles you can eat' deal to take his football boots to China, there's still plenty of cash sloshing around some levels of football. An afternoon to enjoy a local derby in the sunshine, and treat yourself to a 10p teamsheet. I wish I could be there, as I'm sure many others do that can't be at balmy Plainmoor today. It'll be hot so keep those 1899 caps on. I'm assuming they'll be on sale in the club shop by now. Forest Green Rovers have currently sold out of 1889 caps; pity, as I don't think anyone would noticed a 10 year difference. link- 1889 merchandise.
Enjoy the game.

Probably the biggest test of pre season so far but that's all it is a test to see how far we've come and how much further we need to go to be serious contenders for a place in the football league. GJ has the right approach and has proven his worth at so many other clubs with an ongoing plan to continually improve the quality of the squad. Exeter should be better than us and will be favorites to win this. They wont have an easy ride because of our competitiveness and work rate. Whether we have the level of quality to win this one is another matter. Expecting a little more squad bolstering before next weeks opener with players of equal quality to or better than we have here already and that must be seen as the only formula that will get us out of this league and back where we belong. We simply can't stand still and Gill Johnson realises that more than anyone. Todays goal will be to entertain, enjoy and avoid injuries while gaining match fitness and sharpness with the result way down the list of priorities.

Enjoyed the game one we could quite easily have won if we had taken our chances in the first half. One or two not quite at the races and one or two having pretty good games. Mom was Ruari Keating his work rate and willing runs were the highlight of the first period. My personal MOM was Frankie Vincent who is improving with every game and had the best all round game by far today. Reidy again got little joy from his marker. I think hes missing Siako along side him and his tricky runs. Thought Little and Cameron had sound games and Niate did well after missing a few games In fact most did ok today we just lacked that little spark that a truly competitive games brings and not long to wait now. Important we didn't pick up injuries though again Daku looked like he picked up a knock or two. It'll be interesting to see who's coming in this week but I expect to see at least one face from last season maybe Opi Edwards and a center back.
On another note the cost of a portion chips has risen to £3.50 along with a a similar rise on all hot food- ok if they are fresh and tasty but thy're usually stale a dry. The catering still leaves a lot to be desired wont be buying again.

I thought that was an excellent game in preparation for the start of the season against a strong Exeter side that looked particularly good defensively although we did have the chances to win the match.
The only surprise in the lineup was that Kalala who has been one of the stars of the preseason campaign only made the bench today although to be fair Keating has been playing very well and again he ended up as man of the match and it will be very hard to leave him out of the side now with his passing in particular having improved massively. Covolan made his first start and did well and Niate was back from injury.
Torquay dominated the early exchanges forcing three corners in the first five minutes where Exeter barely got out of their own half. Our goal came after 12 minutes as a reward for this good work where Duku managed to regain the ball on the edge of the area (city thought he fouled) and fire home low into the corner of the net.
Covolan did make a very good save midway in the half but Exeter’s main path to our danger area was putting the ball behind Niate who was made to look slow by good solid league opposition, whether that was partly down to his return to injury I am not sure but he seemed better in the second half.
Vincent had a very good game at left back and seemed to get better as the game went on and am now very happy to see him play in this position although I suspect he will have much more to offer playing in the centre of midfield once Davis comes back from injury. Our best move of the game came from a good combination down the right and the low hard cross was well met by Andrews but grazed the bar as it went over. Reid was quiet today and can only remember one quick fire shot that went over the bar in the first half.
The goal came at a bad time just before the break where a long corner was headed back into a mass of bodies in the six yard box and was just forced over the line from short range.
The Exeter players came back on the pitch early and suspect their manager was not too happy with the first half performance. I think we had the first decent chance of the half where again some good work from Keating on the right fired another cross to the far post where Andrews, uncharacteristically, from last season at least, fluffed his first time shot well wide.
As is always the way, you miss your chance at one end and the opposing team goes and score at the other and after some good work from Bowman, Ajose was able to get on the ball drawing defenders to him and nicely squared the ball just out of reach of Covolan for the dangerous Williams to slot home.
Shortly after, Johnson decided to bring on Kalala for Andrews and although he came up with a few nice touches and moves he was also quiet partly down to having to deal with better quality opposition. Little had another good game but today his two free kicks just flew over the bar so it did not appear meant to be for us today and not getting too cocky isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There is confidence and over confidence. Reid had a half chance making room to fire off a shot that ricocheted off a defender but appeals for hand ball were turned down.
So a close fought game which Exeter just shaded. I see Johnson was not too happy and is talking about 3 new signings on Monday to bring the squad up to strength. Would guess at Buse as he was on again today and played tidily and two loan signings, a central defender hopefully (Baldwin?) and maybe Edwards or Cooper?

Remind me who Cooper is? Is that the Exeter defender? Cheers for the match reports.

Am guessing him and Opi Edwards would be an either/or scenario. Someone mentioned that Aden Baldwin has not been featuring in pre-season. I think we need a defensive starter that hits the ground running. We are not improved in that area from where we were at the back end of last season and the radio commentary seemed to consider Niate’s positioning as at fault for the first goal today. Didn’t listen to second half. Others have suggested that Vincent, while willing and athletic, does not have the positional sense for the left back role as of yet. Pleased to hear he was rated today by those on here, but he won’t possibly be as finished an article there as Davis, who will need a while to get back up to match fitness. I would expect Niate and Vincent to be targeted by Boreham Wood and Solihull as things stand. I hope this is an area GJ strengthens next week. I’d be surprised if a centre back isn’t THE priority. If we start with a combination of Niate at centre back and Vincent at left back next weekend, I’d be both very surprised and fearing the worst against quality opposition.

Rob And Boreham Wood might well be deserving of the description 'quality opposition'. So it could well be an opening fixture that tells us more than some have in the past. I'm not sure what cup games there might be, but with 8 league games in August and another 6 in September, we can't rely on a 'strongest set eleven' match in match out, especially once you factor in all the travelling. Next weeks three additions are welcomed, and it's inevitable that plenty of the squad will be getting a fair bit of match time, even before the inevitable injuries affect us. We'll know just what the whole season has in store, once we assess things next Saturday night .
