A WEEK'S A LONG TIME..... ….in the life of Torquay United!
Believe it or not, it was only lunchtime last Thursday when Clarke Osborne announced that he was no longer willing to fund the club and had served notice of his intention to put it into administration. The TUST board has been incredibly busy since then meeting its brief to do everything possible to secure the future of professional football in Torquay. We are all volunteers and give our time willingly to the cause we love. Some are still working and have juggled those commitments with the needs of the Trust, suffering personal financial loss in some cases. We would not have it any other way. This is a summary of what has been done over the past week; Held an emergency board meeting on Friday and informal Zoom meetings every evening this past week
Co-opted three TUST members on to the board to strengthen its experience.
Jon Gibbes is an accountant and will be known to many as the club’s unofficial historian with an unrivalled knowledge of the club’s story. Matt Gorman is a chartered financial adviser and past TUST treasurer. Shaun Tanner is a lifelong supporter and insolvency practitioner. Jon and Matt have been members of our Strategy Team for several years. Offered our full support and best wishes to Aaron Downes and the team at this difficult time.
Launched a Crowdfunder which has raised over £5,000 to date.
Handed out membership details at the home game on Saturday.
Processed an influx of more than 250 new members.
Received and dealt with a huge number of media enquiries resulting in interviews with local television, local press, TalkTV, national football press When Saturday Comes magazine, the Price of Football podcast among others.
Promoted the plight of the club amongst the football community to galvanise support both in terms of attendees at games and also from a financial perspective
Received and responded to many offers of support from members, other Gulls’ fans, supporters of other clubs and other trusts.
Welcomed a very generous offer from Weymouth FC to donate funds from ticket sales for this Saturday’s match.
Discussed the club’s position and offer of assistance with the trusts at Argyle and Exeter.
Made plans for a Fans Forum (subsequently postponed – details to follow) Sought advice from the Football Supporters’ Association and other practitioners.
Met with Kevin Foster MP
Attending cross-party meeting with Torbay Council (this afternoon).
Been approached by potential bidders enabling us to promote the case for fan involvement in the future running of the club.
Proactively sought out other potential bidders.
Met with the club and its advisers which was a very productive meeting providing some comfort of a positive outcome and secure future for the football club (a detailed statement will follow).
Issued frequent updates to members and across social media We apologise to anyone who has contacted us and not received a full reply. We have simply been too busy to deal with everything. We appreciate the support that our membership have offered and reassure ALL supporters of our continued commitment to securing a yellow future.

FAN ZONE
TUST's Chair, Nick Brodrick's column in this week's Herald Express - updated for the latest news.
STAND UP IF YOU LOVE TORQUAY’ SANG THE POPSIDE
BIG PLAINMOOR CROWD SHOWS THE LOVE FOR TORQUAY UNITED
AARON DOWNES STEPS UP AND PASSES THE TEST
Yes, three points from a much needed win on Saturday would have been very welcome but after the events of last Thursday it was more important to see the strength of support for Torquay United. And fans came out in their thousands - fans who had decided to boycott matches, fans who had fallen out of love for the club, fans who felt the feel good welcome to Plainmoor had gone.
The owner, Clarke Osborne, may have decided enough was enough but Saturday’s attendance - 3,642, 33 of whom were away supporters, showed the depth of feeling there is for the club. With an owner who is a football person and a return to a family, friendly atmosphere, this would go a long way to restoring trust in the club.
The bars were packed, plenty went into the club shop to buy merchandise and the programmes sold out. The lucky winner of the 50-50 half time draw walked away with £1002.
*****
After recent weeks of protests what a change to hear the ground rocking with “Come On You Yellows’ and ‘Stand Up If You Love Torquay’ - it was like a huge dark cloud had been lifted. So, surely, the time has come for a clean break, out with the old and in with the new owner(s), new ideas installed. Clearly this is the intention of the administrators to achieve before the club goes into actual administration with the inevitable loss of 10 points. There are, by all accounts, a few Interested parties hovering in the wings but how serious are they?
Since it was announced that the owner had filed for administration there has been an amazing outpouring of good will not just from the Torbay public but from Gulls fans round the world with many ‘ghost’ tickets being bought. And TUST’s membership has had a huge increase from a week ago it has risen from 497 to 726; a big thanks to all those who have joined.
The strength of love for the club doesn’t end there for other clubs, ex-players and supporters’ trusts have been posting wonderful messages of support, many offering tangible help, some even offering financial contributions. In this regard step forward Weymouth who host United on Saturday. For every ticket sold to Torquay fans £5 will be donated to TUST.
It is no secret that TUST has been involved in discussions with the administrators and solicitors handling the hopeful sale of the club. Contrary to wild rumours we have had no dealings with Clarke Osborne. It is at times like this that one sees two sides of social media, one being positive and showing a real desire for Torquay United, the other made-up stories factually baseless.
***** Aveley came to Plainmoor sitting just outside the play-offs and on a decent run. When they went 2-0 down the momentum was with United but the penalty in first half stoppage time was a game changer and probably altered both manager’s team talks. Regulars have seen in recent weeks St Albans, Slough and Aveley not intimidated by playing on the lush, green surface in what is a football stadium well up to Football League standards - well, maybe the floodlights could do with an upgrade. A wonder strike in the second half gave the visitors their point while Aaron Downes’ side tried hard for a winner.
With Gary Johnson departed Downes stepped up with Asa Hall acting as his assistant and all fans were particularly impressed with Downes’ after match interview. TUST has sent him and the players a good luck message.
***** There are 36 points still to play for and a seven point gap to close if United are to figure in the end of season play-offs so administration, resulting in a ten point deduction, has to be avoided at all costs. Known as the ‘business end of the season’, this is the time when directors start to worry about the possibility of relegation so on Monday struggling York City sacked Neal Ardley as they sit just outside the bottom four in the National League, with one of those sides being, surprisingly Woking.
*****
Non-League Crowd Watch: Oldham’s biggest attendance since 2008 was 11,881, Chesterfield 8,301, Southend 6,631, Scunthorpe 3,419.
In the Southern League Premier South it was Hanwell Town at home to Swindon Supermarine. For Swindon a Jake Andrews penalty gave the visitors a 2-0 lead and for the home side a late consolation with Elliot Benyon on the score sheet.
***** United’s Women suffered a league defeat last Thursday at leaders Exeter with the home fixture, due to be played at Brixham’s Wall Park, switched to Exeter’s Cliff Hill training ground. The Women went down 4-2 on Sunday at Moneyfields but in their defence they have had a lot of injuries to deal with and have had to play without any subs.
***** Saturday’s away travel club coach was filled up by Monday and it looks like a great Yellow Army following at the Bob Lucas stadium. The club might well be looking for new ownership but there’s a beating heart with much love for Torquay United.

The earlier message emailed today entitled ‘A Week’s a Long Time’ above has been shared on YA FB page. However, when I click on the link there it only partially loads. Might be me, but tried a few times.
Thanks for the update and tireless work on behalf of us fans. Some stellar board members co-opted this past week given the circumstances we are in.

ADMINISTRATIONThere has been some confusion about the club's position among supporters and even in the press and media. The club is not currently in administration. At this stage only a 'Notice of Intention (NOI)' to appoint an administrator has been lodged with the court on 22nd February. This provides protection against creditor action for an initial period of 10 business days. If desired and agreeable by the court, a further NOI could be applied for to extend the period by 10 days. TUST will be issuing a statement based on our understanding and assessment of the position over the coming days but is seeking absolute clarification on certain points before doing so. As you may appreciate, we can only release information that has been confirmed as accurate and does not breach any confidentiality agreed with the club and its proposed administrators and their legal representatives at our meeting this week. For further information please refer to the club's Q&A section on their website. JOIN HERE - www.tust.co.uk

I know TUST have spoken to three potential owners all with differing visions for what they want to do and there will be others out there with their own take. Probably shows that the previous two times when the club changed hands it wasn’t marketed adequately and like it or not the notice of administration has certainly brought things to head with the phenomenal media coverage helping the cause. Just need to let events and the process take its course until new ownership is able to give the required capital injection with focus on ensuring enough funds are coming into the club to meet its operational liabilities with the Weymouth game being a case in point.

Summary of statement issued by TUST – 7th March 2024TUST Chairman Nick Brodrick and two board members met with a club director and the club’s advisors on 27th February. A Notice of Intention to put the club into administration was served on 22nd February and a further NOI for another period of 10 business days was lodged on 7th March. The club is not yet in administration but still faces a ten point deduction after filing the Notice of Intention. We have been told that Clarke Osborne will write off monies owed to him. There are potential buyers, several of whom have contacted TUST. TUST is working and will work with potential buyers who value fan and community engagement. TUST is also talking with possible “consortium members”. Full fan ownership via a Community Share Issue has not been ruled out but is not the preferred option at this stage. We have reason to believe that fall back plans for a phoenix club will not be necessary, but planning continues just in case. The TUST Crowdfunder set up last month has raised £5,034 so far. Those wishing to donate direct to the club should visit. www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=LP7HTGB8DG24JThe club has asked for direct funding from TUST’s Forever Yellow contingency fund. TUST board does not feel that it is appropriate to apply the fund in this way as it was not accrued with this intention and the board is accountable to its members. After discussions with Weymouth Football Club, TUST is forwarding all the monies donated to TUST by Weymouth to the club to help fund player and staff wages. In addition, TUST is actively engaging in a social media campaign to encourage supporters to attend Plainmoor and to boost club revenue through bars, the club shop, 50/50 draw etc. TUST membership has now passed 750 For full details of all these matters please see the Big Picture statement on our website: link

CLUB OWNERSHIP This is a brief statement by TUST to inform you of what we have been doing over the past week or so. We hope that you will understand why much of this has been of a confidential nature and will continue to be so for the time being. TUST has held conversations with a number of prospective owners, some of whom have been the subject of speculation and others who have not. Some of these have formally expressed their interest to the Club and signed a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) which is why we must respect their right to confidentiality. We have, in some cases, put individuals in touch with each other with a view to forming consortiums. We have been exploring all options and continue to do so. However, we have been informed by our advisers that to say more at this stage could breach protocols and jeopardise potential outcomes. We are not able to share further details of any proposals or parties involved at this stage but will do so as soon as we are able. In the meantime please be assured that the TUST board remain dedicated to securing the best possible future for our football club. We thank you for your patience and understanding JOIN HERE - www.tust.co.uk

FAN ZONE TUST's Chair, Nick Brodrick's column in this week's Herald Express - updated for the latest news. DEVON DAY SUCCESS FOR UNITED IN FRONT OF RIVAL FANS WILL TUST’S FAN LED CONSORTIUM SAVE TORQUAY UNITED? WILL AN INDEPENDENT REGULATOR BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO FOOTBALL? On a crisp, sunny but windswept Spring afternoon the Yellow Army, swelled by fans predominantly from Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City, plus a few seen with scarves of Nottingham Forest, Bristol Rovers, Yeovil, Leicester and Carlisle swelled the Plainmoor gate to 3,029 on what was a special Devon Day on the annual Non-League Day. They witnessed two sides of Torquay United; in the first half an exhibition of possession, fast flowing football which resulted in a 1-0 lead and a backs-to-the wall rearguard display with players putting their bodies on the line to defend that lead in the second half. And there was a collective sigh of relief as the final whistle blew. ***** United’s woes off the pitch are well documented as the club goes into a second extension of 10 business days (more when you factor in Easter) to buy more time to find a buyer. Both Argyle and Grecian fans are well aware of grave situations like this. It was 20 years ago that Exeter City fell into administration with Plymouth suffering a similar fate 12 years ago. Both went through pain and demotion before making return journeys back through the leagues with Argyle now in the Championship and City in League 1. Yes, the Gulls might be fighting for their lives to stay in National South but who is not to say that at some point in the future United will be a football league side once again, under the right ownership? And on Thursday the TUST led consortium was announced as a bidder to take over the club to take the club off life support. But it’s now in the hands of owner Clarke Osborne to decide - unless the club goes into administration. ***** Saturday was a special day for several reasons for a number of people. Much travelled Neil Warnock, manager of eighteen clubs, including a stint at Torquay, having been in talks with a group of potential investors, made an appearance. It was also a day to remember for TUST’s 750th member, Stuart Chapman from Essex, who was presented with a book, “Torquay United - A History in 50 Matches” written and signed by its author Steve Harris in a ceremony in Boots & Laces before the game. And for the one lucky winner of the half-time 50-50 draw who walked away with a whopping £1,900 which included a £750 rollover from an unclaimed draw last home match. ***** So, after two damaging defeats - Taunton and Tonbridge - what had changed to see such a transformation? Last week’s column called for no more Mr Nice Guy and maybe Robbie Herrera being drafted in to help Aaron Downes helped. However, Downes’s ‘get out of jail’ card was putting skipper Asa Hall in the middle of defence with Dean Moxey. This experienced duo gave a master class in defending not bad for 37 and 38 year olds with between them almost 1,200 professional appearances in their careers. The big question now is can Downes motivate this squad to replicate Saturday’s performance on the away travels? Good Friday’s defeat at Yeovil answered that. With only six fixtures left, four on the road, and United’s last away success back in November, points on their travels are vital. Saturday’s three points gave the Gulls a cushion of five points away from the danger zone, now down to four. ***** With new owners one of the hopes is the establishment of a proper academy. Last week I wrote about Ollie Watkins, local lad who ‘got away’ and is now an England international. So, what about another local boy Kieffer Moore? A Wales international. And to these two we can now add Jamie ‘he’s one of our own’ Reid who on his Northern Ireland debut scored inside the first seven minutes. Future talented youngsters living in and around Torbay have to be snapped up in the Torquay model for they are the ones who will generate much needed income. ***** In the National League it’s congratulations to Chesterfield who clinched promotion back to the EFL with a 3-0 win over Boreham Wood, surprisingly in the relegation drop area. Chesterfield have dominated the division having been top since September. ***** It’s well known that the Premier League is awash with funds which they keep talking about distributing down through the football pyramid but have yet to agree how. With their recent inability to deliver £900million, the Government announced the Football Governance Bill which has cross-party support in the Commons. With an independent regulator running football with powers to fine clubs, as well as sorting out financial mismanagement, it’s a win for fans who will have a stronger voice in the running of their clubs. The one disappointing fact is that the regulator’s influence will stop at the National League Premier but that doesn’t mean clubs below that can’t set up their own fan involvement. ***** Non-League Crowd Watch: Chesterfield 9,907, Southend 7,251, Bromley 3,738, Aldershot 3,501, Torquay 3,029. An Ocean Latto goal mid-way through the second half looked to have given Torquay Women a precious three points at relegation rivals Southampton on Sunday but the home side netted a late equaliser. Easter Monday sees United at home to Weston-Super-Mare with a win top of the agenda. COYY JOIN HERE - www.tust.co.uk

A BRIGHT YELLOW FUTURE TUST is working in partnership with a group of business people who are long-standing supporters on a plan to save and rebuild our football club. This will involve a call to arms to raise further funds with details to follow in due course. *************************************************************** EASTER MONDAY UPDATE It may be 1st April but with another huge game at Plainmoor this afternoon it will be no place for fools. Let's get as many of us as possible along to the game and support the team on to a much-needed victory in our relegation battle. The match will be preceded by Radio Devon coverage from 2pm including interviews with TUST Chairman, Nick Brodrick, and lead investor Michael Westcott. Tune in and hear more about our bid to take over the club and reset it as a fan-friendly, community focused club. Since the announcement of our bid last Thursday we have seen another surge in TUST membership to well over 800. We simply don't know what other offers the club have received, if any, but many supporters now see this as the most attractive option for the club's future. Furthermore, since going public with our bid other potential investors have come forward and we have introduced these to the consortium thereby strengthening the funding of the offer. We have received a number of enquiries about TUST's own fundraising and Community Share Issue. Details of this will follow soon with additional information about our consortium's plans for the club. If you are interested in supporting the bid in this way please wait until these details are released. These are challenging but exciting times for our football club but the absolute priority today has to be victory and 3 points this afternoon. Let's all get behind Aaron and the boys and hopefully we can take one step closer to NLS safety. JOIN HERE - www.tust.co.uk

A BRIGHT YELLOW FUTURE CONSORTIUM BID UPDATE Dear member Following today’s announcement that the club has gone into administration we are writing to update you on TUST’s position. We can confirm that a final offer was submitted yesterday (Thursday) by our consortium, which includes a group of six businessmen (all long-standing supporters). We have been advised by the Administrator’s legal representative to expect a decision early next week. We are pleased that the Club has said in its statement earlier today that it has received at least one offer from other parties – we think this is excellent and encouraging news for the Club and TUFC supporters given that there are options to choose from. We have full confidence in the Administrator to make the best choice for the sustainable future of our beloved football club. In the event the Administrator indicates that ours is the preferred bid, then we will immediately commence our due diligence workstreams (financial, legal, operational) which we need to be completed to our satisfaction ahead of final confirmation of our offer. Concurrently during this period, TUST will consult its members on the final bid proposal and the planned launch of a fund-raising campaign, which will include a Community Share Issue. Together with our consortium partners, we plan to organise an in-person open forum for TUST members, potentially as early as next week (possibly Thursday evening – April 11th), to provide more details of the bid and the wider business plan to members and fans and during which we can address your questions as best we can. Just noticed April 10 statement not posted on here. No further news since then : PREFERRED BIDDER We are delighted that it appears that our beloved football club’s future has been secured and that a new prospective owner has been selected by the Administrators. This is good news and should come as an enormous relief for supporters, staff and creditors. Whilst the TUST board and our investor partners are disappointed that we will not be able to deliver the exciting vision we have for the future of the club, we have always made it clear that we would welcome an alternative bid if it offers a positive outcome. Given the acquisition process is on-going and the preferred bidder still has to undertake due diligence, it would not be appropriate for the TUST to comment further. The bidder and the Club should be permitted the time and space to continue their work to bring this process to its successful conclusion. As we have previously stated, we will support any prospective owner of Torquay United who is able to secure our future, which places the Club on a sustainable financial footing, fosters closer engagement with the supporters, the football community and local businesses and allows Torquay United to remain competitive on the pitch. Finally, we would like to thank all those TUST members and others who have offered messages of support for what we were trying to achieve. Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to ensure that your voice is heard in the future running of the club.

FAN ZONE TUST's Chair, Nick Brodrick's column in this week's Herald Express - updated for the latest news. THREE PRICELESS POINTS AT TRURO BUT IT’S STILL IN THE BALANCE CLUB ANNOUNCES PREFERRED BIDDER BUT WHO IS IT? PLAYER OF THE SEASON? WHO’S YOUR PICK? Troubled Torquay United grabbed what could be a priceless 2-1 victory over Truro City on Monday evening to inch away from relegation danger. Their first win away in 2024 and at the 10th attempt since winning at Eastbourne. More of this to follow later in the column. Back on February 22 when the football club filed for administration, subsequently receiving its punishment of ten points deducted as per the National League rules, it was inevitable that administration would follow. This has duly occurred and by doing so has meant that there is now a level playing field with the administrator choosing between, what are to be believed, two bids - the Michael Westcott consortium with TUST and one other unnamed interested party. So, the battle to save Torquay United continues on and off the pitch. And from a club statement issued on Tuesday evening a different preferred bidder was announced. Let’s be clear TUST and the consortium investors have always said that if another bidder had deeper pockets and the right reasons for owning the club we would happily support them. Like all Torquay fans we await to find out who are the preferred bidders. ***** At the start of the season the talk was about United getting out of this league, who would be champions Torquay or Yeovil? Now we’re at the tail end of the season with the club fighting to stay in this league. Relegation to the Southern League would be unthinkable and after a shocking 1-0 defeat at Bath who knows. ***** As to be expected there have been weeks of debate on the various Torquay forums about administration and potential buyers. When TUST confirmed its involvement with a consortium, recently confirmed as being led by Michael Westcott along with a group of fellow investors, that opened the flood gates of opinion - those who are pro and anti TUST. Whilst it is right that there should be healthy debate, there has been relentless speculation with posters filling in the empty gaps. Michael Westcott and TUST have promised to be open and transparent about the current state of the club but more importantly about its future. We all want a Torquay United to watch and support long into the years ahead and should the other bid have succeeded all we ask is that we have a proper community club with fan involvement. ***** On the pitch there’s another battle being fought. With United’s dire away form, no wins since November last year, it’s just typical that the club’s next four games were on the road starting on Good Friday at Yeovil resulting in a 3-0 defeat. On Saturday Welling were also looking to pick up points to ensure safety and Torquay’s cause was not helped when Ross Marshall saw red early on. Despite willing the Gulls on the Yellow Army saw yet another blank afternoon. It really has been a most depressing season. Whilst it may be premature for recriminations there are plenty of fans who have questioned not only recruitment but the make-up of the team’s defence. Apart from the almost relegated Havant & Waterlooville with 85 goals conceded, the next worst with 75 are United. ***** To be struggling in a part-time, regional football league shows how far a once proud EFL club has fallen. Even if the ten points had not been deducted Torquay would only be around 14th. Then came Monday’s trip to play Truro in Gloucester and what a battling performance that was. Playing in their pink (or is it beetroot?) kit United looked up for it and two great goals, the first yet another from QPR loanee Arkell Jude Boyd, his fifth, and one from Brad Ash, helped the Gulls to a much needed three points. An estimated 300 Yellow Army in a crowd of 384 had, at last, something positive to sing about. And could those three points have kept United in National South for another season? Then on Friday came the shock news that a further point had been deducted. ***** The end of this woeful season is in sight and who’s your vote going to for the Player of the Season? There aren’t many of the squad who come out with much credit but Jude Boyd must stand as good a chance as any. As the season draws to a close there are sides looking at promotion and relegation being confirmed along with cup finals: Hornchurch became champions of the Isthmian Premier and Chesham clinched the Southern League Premier South while Gateshead will take on Solihull Moors in the FA Trophy Final. And a number of managers have been losing their jobs. David Noble at Wealdstone and Luke Garrard at Boreham Wood while Mark Moseley returned for his second spell at Weymouth. ***** Non-League Crowd Watch: Oldham 8,797, Yeovil 6,034, York City 5,508, Hartlepool 4,470, Bromley 4,038, Scunthorpe 3,874. ***** Many thanks to reader Lee Cross for his recent correspondence with a number of great ideas for improving the match day experience and boosting attendances. Get in volunteers to help to save costs, pay on the gate, advertising and publicity in hotels, B&Bs and around the harbour. There are always holiday makers down in the Bay at a loose end on a match day. What are your views about your club? Send yours to: fanszone.tu@gmail.com. So, it’s down to points from Taunton and Havant & Waterlooville to stay up. COYY JOIN HERE - www.tust.co.uk
