Here's a question for the historians, and others with a fair knowledge of players and their appearances for the club during the past 20 years.
Whoever would have thought that, of all people, Garry Monk would be the first ex-player to become a Premier League manager? Every time I see him giving an interview on TV, I mentally congratulate him for what he has achieved, but can only wonder how he has done it when compared with his time as a player at our club.

Whoever would have thought that, of all people, Garry Monk would be the first ex-player to become a Premier League manager? Every time I see him giving an interview on TV, I mentally congratulate him for what he has achieved, but can only wonder how he has done it when compared with his time as a player at our club. Garry Monk's rise is all very old-fashioned and not something anyone could have predicted. After that early move to Southampton his career had stalled. When he joined Swansea in 2004, at the age of twenty-five, they were in the fourth tier. This was a division below Torquay United at the time. Monk's destiny appeared to be that of a competent lower-division player who didn't quite live up to his early potential. Perhaps, if he ever went into management, it would be at somewhere like Torquay United. But Swansea rose and rose and Monk was an integral part of their rise. An incredibly popular player too; the contemporary term is, I suspect, "legend". Maybe, once Swansea reached the top flight, he'd drop down the leagues, pick up a coaching position and one day become a rookie manager at Plainmoor? A decent punt you would have thought. But now? I don't think Garry Monk will ever be manager of Torquay United. He's blown it. Perhaps he'd like to buy the club instead? Or perhaps Mike Williamson might like to stump up the cash? The parallels with Monk are striking: a South Devon upbringing; a few games for Torquay United; an early move to Southampton. Released from Southampton but still looking set for a decent lower division career; Williamson was at Wycombe Wanderers until his mid-twenties. Again I'm not sure if we'll ever see Mike Williamson managing Torquay United. But, should he ever wish to buy a club...

I have an old Primary Schools 5 a side Finals night programme from 1988. St Marychurch were one of the teams involved.
Their team was (I don't know any of these people but recognise a few names from local football scene: Steve Aggett Clive Wood Stuart Monk Paul Knapman Paul Jennings Subs: Matthew Knowles Garry Monk James Parsons
I suspect Garry Monk was only a sub because of his relative youth (he would have been 9, instead of 10 or 11 like most of those playing) but it is good to see an ex-Audley Park kid doing so well.

I was, falsely as it transpires, under the impression that Garry Monk was from Paignton.
Then, many years later, I heard he was from Torquay.
Now Hector is telling us that Garry Monk attended St Marychurch primary school.
True, it wasn't Barton. But, nonetheless, his story is becoming ever more magical with its every telling.

Would Steve Aggett have been a son of William or Roger Aggett? I was at Oldway Primary with them and had a 10 and a 12 year old in 1988. So the time scale is possible!

Certainly not the Steve Aggett I knew from secondary school in the 1970s. One of the original Torre Trojans; also Torquay United Colts at some stage I believe.

I have a team picture at the under 12 pioneer cup final, whilst he was playing for torre Trojans. Next to me stands a smallish chap by the name of Garry Monk. Unfortunately we lost the game and Garry joined Torquay Colts for the rest of his youth career, winning most of the league trophys with them during this time.
Garry was a forward for us at the start before being moved to a defender, as he was a bit too casual in front of goal. At Torquay Colts I seem to remember him mainly as a right back, maybe occasionally in the centre.
I have a lot of respect for Garry, whilst being a good player playing a year above his age, it was his attitude to the game that has taken him to the heights of today. I still find it very strange seeing him on tele and in the newspapers and I haven't seen him since he was 18 when he had not long signed for Southampton and was on the edge of the 1st team squad. In typical Garry fashion, considering he was about to become a premiership footballer he played this down, almost in a what will be will be way.
Good luck to Garry, I sincerely hope he makes it to the very top, though I would so suggest he's not far off it already!

If you able to scan the picture and post on this forum, maybe using photo bucket then I'm sure will be of interest but Don't worry if not. Garry seems to be doing very well at Swansea and just signed a new contract with them and hope he continues to make progress!

What has happened to 'Barton Downs'? He is now showing as 'LummatonCross1' and as a deleted member. Have I missed something?

I am gutted to say that he deleted his account over the weekend and in his own words has decided to retire unhurt from the fray to pursue other interests elsewhere. He has joined the numerous ranks of lurkers on here but does send his best wishes to you. Whether that is the end of a very knowledgeable poster on here I cannot say but as always will look forward to seeing him at matches.

That's a real shame, as Barts was a very knowledgeable and informative poster. Totally respect his decision but I do hope he reconsiders at some stage, and returns. A real stalwart, who will be missed.
