Obviously we had no winger to bring on. I think Hargreaves looked back to last week when Bowman went off and performance levels dropped off. However, there were a lot of goal kicks that Bowman wasn't even competing for as he was clearly knackered and was put through at one stage but didn't have the legs to get on the end of it.
Possibly one effect of Gateshead playing deep, our forwards had to do a lot of pressing throughout the game and even Ajala dropped off the pace for the last quarter.

Thanks for the reports everyone. Much appreciated.
In terms of McQuilkin it seems he is an alternative to Luke Young in that position or option when going three in central midfield. Whether or not he might feature more after the January sales is something I'm sure will have been mentioned at the match in some quarters. Certainly a poster on another forum is hinting that Bristol City are teeing up a £100k offer for Luke Young. If it's being contemplated, we'll all be gutted to see Young leave, but it's sensible forward planning if that becomes likely and good that he got game time.
For me, there's no reason why the 4-5-1 can't become a more attacking 4-3-3 while chasing the game, but am guessing the problem was the key personnel involved were all blowing out of their backsides at that point. Have seen Benyon actually do a decent job as one of the wider ones in that formation at Wimbledon for Hargreaves' first game in charge, oddly enough. Is that where he dropped in when he came on, out of interest? Or too little time to tell?

I suppose I will be even more gutted if we sell our best player if we are around the play offs come January - rather end of the season myself. McQuilkin does seem to be a similar type of midfielder but needs a lot of match time I think.
Last few minutes were pretty frenetic and disjointed. Clocked Benyon doing his usual running down but certainly wasn't on the right wing in the traditional sense!

Agreed, would be upset to see young go as soon as january, would hope to get a season from him at least - especially as you say we are in or around the play offs. We certainly wouldn't get another player of his quality anytime soon. Just look at what a hole Eunan left in our team following his departure. Anyway, does anybody have an idea whether talk of young going to city has any semblance of fact??

If we're looking at the same poster (all the capital letters) it looks like £200k, which in anybody's book, is good business, and might just give us a tilt at the play-offs this season...unless of course all the money is going to be thrown at the training ground again!

More likely mostly used to repay some of the "loans" from our benefactor. No complaint from me if that happens as we cant keep expecting more money to be pumped into the club ad infinitum. Reasonable business if the figure is correct as I would say he isnt as good as Eunan (who cant seem to get regular pitch time nowadays at AFCB).

No complaints about some of the money going back to Thea, but if that figure is correct, then I think half should go on players. Shit...what was that just went by my window...oh, a flying pig!

If we do sell Luke Young I'm afraid it will be back to square one as far as team building for any promotion push goes but its inevitable unfortunately as he is easily at least one level above us and the scouts will have noticed. And I don't believe we will be " buying " any replacement those days are over with costly mistakes like Billy Bodin etc. In any case recent history proves with a good scouting system you can pick up quality for nothing and I would be investing some of that money into further improving the scouting infrastructure - if or when we start to lose the better players for money. Its a difficult balancing act for a manager and club with limited resources and we paid the price with our league status last time we sold our best player even though I know we had no option. If we had managed to find a decent replacement we would still be in the football league but it never happened. I also reckon Greavsy noticed what a massive influence on the game Forrest Greens Sinclair had last week the type of player we just haven't had for years so maybe McQuilkin is our new play maker in midfield!
The signing of McQuilkin maybe be the cover Hargreaves is looking for whether or not Young does attract serious interest in the coming months. My only fear is he will become the next Danny Stevens, similar in build and an easy target for the abusers. I also believe Hargreaves has now had enough time to make judgements on our younger crop of home grown players. Yeoman, Thompson, Sullivan haven't been able to push our "free" signings out of the first team and I believe he will try and free up more space to strengthen in January and lets face it they have all been given more than enough time and opportunity.

McQuilken looked ok, but it would be unfair to place the mantle of expectation on him, as a replacement for Young, should Young move on. He just is not in that league and Young has grown rapidly as a player in these last few months - the utter talisman for the team, probably thanks to Hargreaves giving him the captaincy (a choice that CH doesn't seem to get enough credit for as it was an inspired choice, in my view).
McQuilken looked tidy but, as Pete points out, his Stevensesque stature, is likely to draw similar comparisons and he doesn't strike me as the fulcrum of midfield, more of a supporting member of the cast.

i suspect even if we got 100,000 for young not a bean would go back into the pot for getting a bit of quality in.I reckon 50,000 offered and we will snap the offer up for him.We were told at one time, any players that were sold all proceeds would go back into the managers kitty,it never happened.200,000 on a still unfit training ground, and a non league squad. And we will bob along til the real season from hell comes along and before you know it conference south arrives. And we are more than capable of that. From top to bottom the club is a shadow of its former self, tis very sad
