Oh dear could have been a couple more lots of work to do especially defending. Poor pen that could have changed things around, a game changer at a crucial stage. Under no illusions and never was it was always going to be tough. This league gets stronger every year.

Thanks for the link, Rob. I cannot somehow see our club being that efficient in putting up videos. In fact will our club even make the effort? The other bizzare thing is that on my lap-top Rice's shirt clashes with our own blue shirts. So what colour was Rice's shirt? Talking of Rice, what a pathetic effort he made for their first goal - rooted to his line and the opposition scored about 2 yards out. As my son says, just because he is playing in the Conference again does not mean he should play like he did last time he was in the Conference.
Let's face it listening to yesterday's commentary and seeing those highlights it was men against boys. Gateshead are far superior to us and we are simply carrying too many passengers - our full-backs, Downes lack of pace, Harding lack of contribution and Benyon to name a few.
Thank god we got got Briscoe - what a fantastic goal and he won our penalty. I think Bowman can come good as well. But sadly we are stuck with too many non-achievers from last season so will we be able to improve much with them around? Personally I would like to see those on the transfer list not starting and use different options. Try out our promising youngsters instead!

Only watched last weeks game at Exeter and a couple of things were glaring despite our win. We lost the ball in crucial midfield areas, caught in possession in bad areas and it happened yesterday. Rice doesn't look comfortable all of a sudden now he has gained the No 1 jersey. Our wing backs full backs are as poor as they come no pace and struggle to support our front wide men. Downes has zero pace and despite being defensively aware looks like a statue at times. No real leader on the pitch and with a number of them starting who are listed, Downes, Benyon, Tonge, Harding, you do wonder if they are mentally fully committed with uncertainty over their own futures. Something that may not be overly apparent to the manager he may just be to close to them to realise. I think most of us realise most of that but i am surprised that the defensive weaknesses haven't really been addressed in the close season and to be successful and avoid another embarrassing struggle that should have been a priority. Good foundations and all that, Its all been said before. Good to see Nico starting and gaining a point with Kiddie yesterday.

Only having seen the highlights, jeez we were very poor and Gateshead could have scored seven.

link - highlights of yesterday's game if you can bear to watch! I did and it wasn´t good. I agree with Chelston, on a bad day it could have been 7 or 8. The defence was a shambles! Just had a look at the history of Welling (Tuesdays opponents) www.wellingunited.com/wp/history/

Spot on that swanny......bout not starting with transfer listed players............I know it's all ifs and buts but if that pen had gone in we don't know what would of happened......ave seen brief highlights......yeah you are all right it could have been a lot worse.......but also some positives ok not a lot of them......do like the look of Bristow.....also still think bowman a good signing for us........long way to go guys.....si

Frankfurt - thanks for the link - not a team I know much about.
Si - still early days yet - remember beating Aldershot 3-0 away in August - they ended up with over 100 points!
Swanny - probably starting with four transfer listed players is not the right balance and think our starting XI will be an evolving situation.

despite driving almost a thousand miles,i must say one of the better away trips i can remember, the locals were so friendly and the area is surprisingly pleasant, thats the nice bits.3pm,it all changed,i cant really add much to what has been already said, other than mr H better learn pretty quickly, that some of these will never cut the mustard,we know it so he should as well.Just a bit concerned the new signings some who are quite good will be dragged down with the under achievers hanging around the club at present, some of whom he is determined still to pick.A terrible opening performance, definitely not what the doctor ordered

Even those who were relatively upbeat during pre-season drew up a list of worries and concerns about the coming season: vulnerability in defence and a liability to being overrun in midfield being chief amongst them. That, I'm afraid, is exactly what we saw today. I am still hoping that whereas all the teams in League 2 (other than Exeter City) would take advantage of those deficiencies, half the teams in the Conference might not be good enough to - clearly Gateshead were.

A certain Mr AF with the cap on in the last photo, resplendent in his regular yellow shirt!
