the British government has decided that the Anzacs rescue at Gallipoli never happened and want to get cosy with Pakistan and SriLanka instead! well I got one thing to say to them "f*¢k off" ! I think it's time to cut the commonwealth adrift and remove that piece of sh1t union flag out of the top left corner of our flag and wash our hands of our history just like Britain is trying to do to us! it's quite possibly the most disrespectful and disgusting thing I've ever heard of! just because we whitewashed England in the Ashes! jeez I thought it was they Crouts that don't like it up em! over 60,000 aussie lives lost in that one battle against the Ottoman empire to bail out the British cock up and this is the respect we are paid? I hope you guys can see why we're p1ssed off!

Some press reports may have exaggerated facts but I think you will find that Gallipoli is etched on the minds of most Brits with one hell of a lot of respect and gratitude!!!!

Indeed, my great-grandfather (Sjt in the Manchesters) was one of the fallen in the Dardnalles. Always made rememberance day parades a bit more personal for me.
Aussie, politicos of all persuasions are just a bunch of self-serving scumbags for the most part. I wouldnt take it to heart if I were you...

I think they're trying to say that WWI is 'celebrated' as a matter of course in and by the UK, Canada, Australia and NZ but we have never really acknowledged the contributions made by India and black Africa.
Indeed, I thought so but I had to check, but India topped the death tolls for Empire and ex-BE countries.

no not at all, their trying to appease the liberal left and pander to Islam! their wanting to forget the contribution that the Anzacs gave and they want to highlight the involvement of the minor players!
India topping the death tolls only confirms that they were crap soldiers, they weren't at Gallipoli dying in their thousands rescuing the British from one of their biggest cock ups in military history! look I understand that lots of English hate Australia, I understand how difficult it must be to be second to a country you founded and are upstaged by your little cousins at nearly every turn! it must be difficult as a pommie to swallow that little pill, once the global leaders now nothing more than a fallen empire! if the journo's and politicians want to forget Australia then I'm going to keep reminding them off all the great British f*°k ups!

How pleasant. Those who died fighting for the cause are, of course, more than worthy of our respect. And that includes those soldiers of India disrespectfully referred to by our modern day Aussie. I see Cameron has tried to 'backtrack' as it were. Very much agree with the sentiments regarding the modern day politician. I really don't think that many British or English 'hate' Australia, though. Far too strong a word for the odd sporting rivalry or two.

It doesn't take much of a trawl to see 'interesting' attitudes toward India and it's peoples becoming Melbourne news stories in recent times. Doesn't read well, really. I'm sure Aussie will explain himself. Hopefully less aggressively.

how did I disrespectfully refer to them? or is it purely because I merely mentioned them as minor players, a label of fact! I wonder why I have taken an aggressive stance! maybe this subject had sufficiently pissed me off! oh how's everything north of Penn Inn?
if we want to know the truth behind the Indian death toll being so high then you best ask the British government why these people were used as Canon fodder!
as far as sporting rivalry goes no it's not too harsh, I'm on the receiving end of so called English banter all the time, try being a foreign person in a country and see what stick you get! most English people think it's ok to abuse Australians because we are so very similar so it doesn't count as racist!

Jon I really do struggle on my phone, I can't get the smileys to work, the remark about being crap soldiers was meant to have a eyeroller smiley, they weren't crap soldiers at all just used as cannon fodder by the Brits, which in my opinion is far worse than anything I've said! also I thought the British Indian forces were British forces based in India rather than Indian people fighting for Britain!
also this medication I'm on is riddled with side effects, getting over emotional is one of them! I do apologise!

A war of attrition I think it's called, which roughly means if you lose 500.001 and I lose 500.000...I win! I use such high numbers to illustrate this because the powers that be were quite happy to see such losses! On this occasion we seem to have lost by a comparatively low number of 64. I'm not sure if we ever got off the beachhead, but in the words of that other great war veteran Blackadder..."we moved no further than an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping!"

From the perspective of a history student, it's funny how Dan Snow, who's great-grandfather was a general in World War I who sent many soldiers to their deaths, is saying World War I wasn't all that bad. That Mandy Rice-Davies quote springs to mind...
Basically, it's on a par with all the guff that Michael Gove has been coming out with lately. Yes, some of the prevailing stories about WWI are exaggerated but the overriding point remains. The revisionism coming from certain (generally right-leaning) quarters is undoubtedly happening for a reason, because of the nature of this year - not only is it the 100th anniversary of the start of the war but also there's the Scottish independence vote, which is probably going to be tied into that by the government and those against independence ("English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish soldiers fought together" etc), and the continuing involvement of British forces in Afghanistan ("war isn't all that bad" etc). They have a vested interest in erasing the "war to end all wars" side of things and just promote it as a great British triumph, which it certainly wasn't
The way history in general has been treated of late, particularly by the government, is absolutely disgraceful. The history curriculum in schools has been torn apart. It's pretty much worthless now - "ra ra Britain, let's forget all the empire stuff and the wars and the other terrible things we did; let's not engage with any of that critically, because it's not important"
