rjdgull Well done to prominent TUST member rjdgull for putting forward the reasons he believes this moribund thread needed 'revitalising' Those cynical readers unconvinced that it's entirely coincidental that this 'revitalising' after 6 years has coincided nicely with TUST seemingly about to enter into a season long funding commitment, and who have already earmarked £500 of TUST funds to buy tracksuits for the ladies team should be ashamed of themselves  |

Floridagull I'd assume that TUST members will pass or reject the relevant motions at their forthcoming AGM. And that their agreement will be received before the Ladies ...oops I mean Women, get any nifty new tracksuits. Known TUST members across the forums may be exhibiting a disdain for democracy as regards the implementation of the UK electorate's Brexit vote, but hopefully they still value it a bit more within their own 'representative' organisation. TUST based humour has a long and proud tradition on TFF. I do what I can to keep it going. Neither does rjdgull generally mind having his leg pulled a bit, and I don't anticipate it being any different this time  Up the Ladies ! |

You need to be a bit careful there. It is possible that some do not like it up ‘em and having watched a bit of ladies football I wouldn’t want to get on their wrong side! Not too late to join TUST and bring your eloquent arguments to the AGM on Thursday week. I know that many would love to meet you! |

I spent some time in Chapel Hill this summer and watched UNC ladies soccer team practice and play. Totally impressed. Anybody who dismisses the women's game should head to North Carolina.

As TUFC men were away this weekend, it was a nice day and I had a free afternoon, decided to go and watch the women’s team which was my first woman’s live match since seeing Japan v Brazil at the Millennium Stadium in the 2012 Olympic games.
Arrived 10 minutes late as unfortunately went in the industrial estate opposite South Devon College which was close by but you actually need to turn left at the first roundabout after turning off the Ring Road and then right at the next roundabout to take you up to the sports centre.
Despite it being scoreless when I arrived Bideford were well on top to the extent that we were struggling to get any meaningful possession in their half and it was very much a rear guard action. Two first half goals were conceded and it could have been more with only a speculative long range shot to cheer the home support. Luckily there is a Costa coffee nearby to get a half time brew.....
The second half was more open as it often is but two quick fire goals early on for Bideford ended the game as a contest. We did have more pressure on their goal and after our number 9 won a foul just outside their area, the same player struck a good free kick which their keeper made the save of the match low to her left. Moments later our number 9 was able to get a quick fire shot away in the area but unfortunately straight at their keeper when it would have been in if directed either side.
The game finished 0-8 with Bideford scoring in injury time to wrap up a comprehensive victory but it was pleasing to see our girl’s heads never dropped and they tried their utmost to the last. Our number 3 picked up an injury in the second half which was a blow as she was one of our better players and hopefully just bruising.
Hard to be critical as I am new to this level of football and my thoughts may not be fair. We do have some good players in a very young side and I did see plenty of skilful touches. However, I would like to have seen some more composure on the ball with some aimless clearances giving the ball away unnecessarily or kicked straight out of touch when maybe possession could have been retained although appreciate the safety first approach when under long spells of pressure.
A couple of cases in point. A long ball to our back line was booted straight back to their attacker when it could easily have been controlled under no pressure and a meaningful pass sought. On another occasion, the ball could have been shepherded out by our defender for a goal kick fairly comfortably but possession was lost and immediately we were put under pressure.
Nevertheless, enjoyed the game today as a different experience and wish the coaches all the best in improving the side and will try to watch some more games when the opportunity arises.

Worth noting that TUWFC play their last home game of the season this Sunday at 2pm against Callington Town. If interested and unsure how to find the ground, take the south Devon College turning off the ring road between the Premier Inn and Costa Coffee. First exit at the roundabout and then third exit at the next going up a partially unmade road with new houses on the left and a building site on the right to the car park at the top.
It hasn’t been a good season with relegation just about certain but hopefully experience has been gained and the team will rebuild and come back stronger.

I got down to see the Callington match earlier today and while I couldn’t see Torquay win for the second time this weekend it was a marked improvement both from the previous home match and apparently from the corresponding away fixture earlier this season where we were thumped and today actually led for a large part of the first half.
We lined up with a new forward, Abi, certainly had a bit of pace about her and always felt she had a chance with the long ball over the top although it was difficult with the wind today on what is in quite an exposed hilltop position. Our goal came when we got a bit of possession around their area following pressure on their keeper and the subsequent delivery into the box was well controlled by Hanna and then on the turn whacked the ball onto the left hand post which rebounded across and behind the goal line.
Although we were a lot more competitive all round the pitch Callington certainly had a number of chances in the first half but were denied well by our busy keeper coupled with them being wasteful at times, possibly due to the pressure of being behind.The referee was half decent but you always get at least one bizarre decision and from one Callington attack a cross hit our left back from a range of 2 metres straight in the face which saw her concede both a free kick right on the edge of the area and a yellow card for her pains.
We had a chance to go 2 nil up shortly before the break with our own freekick just outside their area but unfortunately it was a fairly routine save for their keeper to make. Then just as I was wondering when the half-time whistle was going to go, Callington were able to get behind our defence and from a tight angle finally beat our keeper. A bad time to let one in.
We started the second half with a good chance to take the lead when through on goal but this was spurned with a weak shot from outside the area when perhaps a little more confidence was needed to hold off the covering defender and take the ball into the area and commit the keeper?
As the half wore on we did start to defend deeper and deeper and were put under more pressure and conceded quite a few corners. I think it was from one of these that a penalty was awarded from an overly strong challenge to get to a bouncing ball and the resulting kick was strongly put away to the left. Another melee in our box saw the ball chipped in for their third and a fourth was added which I missed as had to pop into the nearby Churston farm shop before it closed at four to get the family Sunday dinner!
Nevertheless, an enjoyable Sunday afternoon of football and encouraging to see a few Torquay fans dotted around the ground.

Rob could you enlightenment to the nature of the relationship between TUFC and the woman's team. For instance does the main club provide any financial support to the women?
I find it curious that TUST is able to provide sponsorship for the woman's team whilst effectively being banned from Plainmoor.

Think the Women’s team are more separate from TUFC and closer to the Community Sports Trust these days but the TUFC directors have representatives on that board so have the opportunity to provide funding. My impression is that the club are very much focusing on the men’s first team which many fans would agree with but leaves the women scrabbling around for funds, hence the TUST involvement as per their recent minutes and is part of their mandate from their last AGM to help in the football community with a proportion of surplus funds. |

Just to be clear, this £450 is the first time that Tust have contributed towards the women’s football team. It is clear that due to their shortfall they are underfunded and if you look at their website then you can see only four of their players obtained sponsorship for the current season. If their profile can be raised then hopefully this would bring more sponsors on board and plug that funding gap - linkOh, if they don’t close the shortfall and fulfil their fixtures then they could be expelled from their league..... |
