link - The women’s team are away to Liskeard athletic tomorrow afternoon. This is a run of five games against lower and mid table sides that we need to be ruthless as we were last week as the top three sides above us have rarely dropped points against the lower teams this season. A good set of results in these matches would set us up nicely for the final five games in which we play each of the current top three, the first of these crunch games is away against Bristol Rovers on the 19th of February which may be shaping up as a possible title decider!

1-0 up at half time. Could have had more, hitting the inside of the post amongst other chances. Started 4-4-2 with a switch before just before half time back to their normal 4-3-3.

A hard fought 2-1 win to Torquay today keeps up their 100% home record and pressure on the league leaders, now just 3 points off top spot with games still in hand. While Bishops Lydeard had few clear chances it was still close as epitomised by the last kick of the game which only just sailed over the Torquay bar and a tad lower would have seen the points shared.
It is great having strikers of the quality of Kilburn-Thompson and Pengelly but a front two as opposed to the usual front three means a reduced midfield and Bishops Lydeard worked hard to ensure there was a lot less service to our strikers. Having said that Torquay did have 4 or 5 good chances in the first half. The first goal came early on after a cross from the right saw Bishops Lydeard appealing for offside and making the mistake of stopping and while the two strikers may have been off, Daisy Self was adjudged to be on and got to the ball first to slot home from just outside the 6 yard box.
Kilburn-Thompson looked sharp today (great to see her back in the side) and could have scored a couple in the first half, the best being a lovely chip over the keeper which unfortunately hit the inside of the post and came back out, another attempt from close range was blocked. We also had pressure and chances from corners wIth Bishops Lydeard’s best chance in the first half coming from a free kick that was hit over the wall to the far corner only to find Emma Hunt who had been strategically placed there to head clear.
Bailey was brought on just before half-time to bolster the midfield at the expense of Kilburn Thompson and going into the second half the game turned into a battle with Bishop Lydeard trying to get on the front foot but Torquay generally defended well. Pengelly showed her experience and has more tricks than a barrel load of monkeys. However she gained the side a much-needed cushion after a slight mistake from their defender was seized upon by her to race clear and calmly round their keeper to slot home.
However just three minutes later a rash challenge from Richards right on the edge of the area after Torquay had not cleared the ball earlier gave the referee no option other than to point at the spot and the resulting penalty was calmly slotted away by the Bishops Lydiard striker. This made for an awkward last 10 minutes with Kilburn Thompson coming back on for Pengelly (yes, they can do that!) to provide more pace giving an outlet up front and generally doing this well with the closest Bishop Lydeard coming to an equaliser being that last kick.
So a good important win and something that promotion winning teams need to do when too many players are not quite on their A game.

Player of the match, left back Ocean Latto gave her thoughts on Sunday’s win. Lot more to come from this player as she continues to mature and gain experience. Meanwhile, looking at matches over the next month, big one coming up away against Bristol Rovers - link

link - Danni Wyatt is now player assistant manager. Think she is suited and will do well in this role.

link - Danni Wyatt is now player assistant manager. Think she is suited and will do well in this role. weltchmedia.com link - Danni’s sponsors Weltch media put out a press statement with an interview on her new dual role. link - In the meantime the women have a long trip to Wootton Bassett tomorrow. A team bottom of the league, but the match last week against Bishops Lydeard shows we can’t take this for granted. However, I am hoping in order of preference that a) we win b) we score early and get a good win to improve our goal difference. C) it is on TUFC radio. COYY

link - the women keep going with a comprehensive 4-0 away win at Royal Wootton Bassett. Connie Pengelly got the opener, followed up by an Esme Kilburn Thompson hat-trick. No surprise there as said she looked sharp in my match report last week and both strikers coming in mid season has been a significant boost to the team. Now up to 3rd place, just a point behind the leaders Forest Green who only managed to draw at home to Liskeard and Bristol Rovers who had a comprehensive 4.0 away win of their own again Poole Town. We do have three games in hand on Forest Green and two games in hand against Bristol Rovers though with the latter shaping up to be our main rivals for promotion. We leapfrog Sherborne town who lost at home by two goals to nil against Bishops Lydeard, again no surprise there, as thought they were a good compact team that were hard to break down last week at Coach Road. Just noticed that Sherborne Town have 6 away matches out of their last 7 games so going to be a tough call for them to make up ground after this defeat today.

TUWFC match report - are only third, but still one point off the top with games in hand as Bristol Rovers won their delayed game yesterday, hence the discrepancy.

link - the women are away to Ilminster tomorrow, which is only a relatively short trip along the A303 on the other side of the Blackdown Hills. They will be confident having beaten the same team 7-0 at home a month ago but on the other side of the coin, their opponents will not want to be stuffed again on their home patch so no doubt will make it as difficult as possible. Elsewhere second placed Forest Green are at home against Sherborne and if they do not win, this is an opportunity for the women to go top of the league as leaders Bristol Rovers are not playing this weekend.

Elsewhere second placed Forest Green are at home against Sherborne and if they do not win, this is an opportunity for the women to go top of the league as leaders Bristol Rovers are not playing this weekend. Very pleased to see another win on the road for the women travelling up this morning to make a day of it in Somerset. Checked the team squad just before kickoff and noticed that they had accidentally left goalie Emma Ayres off the team list before looking at the players on the pitch and realising that Sasha Mole was the stand in keeper, only for the second time after her heroics in the county cup last year. Overall, it was a hard fought slightly laboured win where Torquay were dominant, but without much cutting edge or bite in a lot of attacks. Main talking point of the first half was Connie Pengelly being given a yellow card entailing a 10 minute sin bin sending off for swearing! It really is a different game sometimes. However, she got the last laugh with a good shot into the top of the net to open the scoring against the Ilminster slightly diminutive keeper just before halftime. Connie certainly seems to be one of those players that is always going to be in the thick of the action. Playing 4-4-2 in the first half, the management team tightened things up in the second half by bringing off Esme Kilburn-Thompson and replacing her with midfielder Daisy Self leaving Connie to lead the line on her own up front. Ilminster were unable to carve out any clear-cut chances and stand in keeper Sasha Mole was comfortable all afternoon but much prefer her in the back four and may have been found out against a better team. Torquay hit the bar from a header directly from a corner but it took a free kick from no other than Connie Pengelly, curling towards the far post, but their keeper spilled it and Daisy Self was there to slot home the second goal of the afternoon which effectively sealed all three points. Esme came back on late in the second half to replace a retiring Natalie Warman on the left wing who had a good game showing some nice touches. Just as well as I was sad to hear that top scorer and regular in this position, Ellie Bishop, has moved on to Bridgewater who are two leagues higher up in the National League Southern Premier. She came on today as a substitute, getting an assist so good luck to her but think we will sorely miss her pace and getting in behind those defences. To summarise, our defence as usual, was very solid to the extent that Sasha Mole was not unduly troubled. Midfield worked really hard with Rhi Bailey perhaps my pick there. Pengelly was my player of the match with a goal and an assist. The joker in the side.
