A young Gary Smart in the reserve team. He went on to have a decent career with Oxford United.

There's an interesting piece in that 1981 programme about the cancellation of the special train to Blackpool in October. When is a train an excursion to view the illuminations? And when is it a football special? Alan Merso.n is quoted at length explaining the club's position.
No such problems for me. I'd just moved to Swansea and had noticed an advert in the Evening Post for an excursion train to Blackpool on the very day Torquay were due to play there. An early start on the Saturday morning; a lunchtime arrival; straight to the match; evening in Blackpool; train home at 0015 Sunday morning.
Two memories. One is of meeting Torquay supporters during the evening who, I think, were travelling back overnight. Two, the sheer volume of people queueing at Blackpool North to catch the numerous returning excursion trains just after midnight. I'm not sure if anything happens on that scale now.

The next special train to Blackpool was to be in January 1990 taking hundreds of Gulls fans up for the FAC 4th round game. Seem to remember coming home in a snow storm, diverting us around the old Yeovil Pen Mill Junction and very probably being hauled by a class 47 diesel, happy days !
