So the new season is finally here and we get to see how competitive we are although we are in desperate need of another striker to give us that cutting edge. We haven't created an awful lot in preseason with the Yeovil goals coming from defensive mistakes, Tivvy being a long range shot from a midfielder with a defender scoring against Hereford.
Wimbledon didn't have the best defence last year and look to have strengthened this area. They have signed left back Callum Kennedy from Scunthorpe, no doubt Knilly will know about him, right back Barry Fuller and goalie Ross Warner. Incidentally, Ashley Bates has been brought in as their goal keeping coach and Shaun North to manage their development squad.
Other significant additions include bringing back midfielder George Francombe from Norwich, he was on loan there last year, striker Charlie Sheringham, yes, son of Teddy who was released by Bournemouth and winger George Porter on a season loan from Burnley and could be a bit lively! Chris Arthur has also been signed in midfield.
Subject to Poke being fit, I think our defence and central midfield is fixed in stone. If no one else is signed up front this week then it could be the same line up as Hereford with Bodin supporting Benyon and our new signings on the wing. However, as stated previously, I hope Knill can get a new striker in although better to get the right player as opposed to meeting the deadline for this match, where registration is a day or two before....

Always the way, a few hours after the opening post, Wimbledon have signed 21 year old Michael Smith on loan until the new year from Charlton. He has been on loan previously at Accrington, Newport and Colchester.

Rice
Tonge Downes Pearce Nicholson
Cameron Mansell Harding Chappel
Ball Benyon
The above is what I reckon will be taking the field on Saturday if Poke is still unfit. Bodin, Yeoman and Cruise all within shooting distance of a start as well. Options from the bench a plenty whatever X1 starts. Come on you yellows.

I wouldn't disagree with you there, maybe keep one of the speedy wingers on the bench for later in the game as legs with tire, particularly as it is fairly warm at the moment.

Genuine competition for a starting spot, we didn't have that last year. I know its a squad game but can Knilly keep all that talent happy!!

Thats probably pretty close though I suspect Bodin will start on the left. Would prefer to see Cruise start, just for his increased pace over Nico

A lovely start to the day and really looking forward to getting back to watching our club this season. Knill knows his starting XI and in a few hours so will we. I think Ball will be making his debut today with Hawley possibly his if he comes off the bench. Hopefully there will be a decent crowd and atmosphere to make it a memorable day!

My main conern is who will be between t' sticks - Ricey or an unfit/injured Pokey. Ricey did just fine pulling off a number of saves to pick up the man of the match award in only his fourth league start, only beaten by a deflection. Nice to see him pick up his son in the family stand at the final whistle, noticed he was wearing a Torquay shirt.

Ok just a quick summary of how I viewed the game and performances today. Wimbledon looked well up for it as you would expect of any opening day fixture and seemed to win most of the second ball which was a little disappointing. On occasions you could tell that the side that started had not played together and the likes of Pearce and Ball did well to hide the fact though our passing could have been a whole lot better at times. Playing two orthodox wingers in Cameron and Bodin who both lack any real defensive qualities is asking for trouble especially with a midfield of two in Mans and Harding. Both hardworking but pretty basic in the creativity department. We gave away possession to easily at times yet Wimbledon managed to pass the ball and retain it and work there way "through us on numerous occasions. Rice producing one outstanding low save in the first period. Ball struggled to hold he ball up and bring others into the game but did show plashes of quality but in general the Womble's defenders had him in their pocket. A generally even first half with neither side dominating Wimbledon perhaps shading it on clear cut chances which left me wondering a little what the score line might have been against better quality opposition. Second half and we improved keeping possession better and pressing them back though they always looked a threat on the break. It got a bit end to end in the final quarter and we were eventually punished with and excellent Harry Pell strike from outside of the box that flew high past Rice. Two minutes remaining and a last throw of the dice in Thompson who threw some tasty "get on the end of it" crosses one eventually finding Downes head who planet it low in the corner to the relief of us all. The game looked lost but we finally pushed up hard on there back line got bodies in the box and got our reward. Not a convincing display by any stretch and a points a point but there is plenty to work on and much room for improvement which I am certain Knill and the squad will admit to.. Rice was outstanding and his kicking was truly top class. Benners worked his socks off as usual and Downes the pick of the rest with most doing ok but for me we generally lacked a bit of quality on the ball. There you have it and plenty for Mr Knill to ponder over these coming days weeks and months.

Could feel their late goal coming and am very releived with a point. We can only get better surely or we are asking for trouble. Really like our kit tho, will look good under lights.

Felt a bit sorry for Ricey cos he looked fine today, only to be beaten by a deflection off Downesys head when he was moving to save it. Fully deserves to keep his place for the next match

Torquay 1-1 AFC Wimbledon. A vital late header from Aaron Downes saved Torquay from a poor home defeat.
Player Ratings:
Martin Rice: 9/10 m.O.m Great performance by Rice. Made some great saves to keep Torquay in the game. Not as worried about Poke being injured now.
Dale Tonge: 7/10 Wasn't involved a great deal but what he had to do he did well.
Krystian Pearce 7/10 Do some very good bits in the match but looked rash at times. In fairness Brian Saah took 6 months to become good.
Aaron Downes: 8/10 Typical game couldn't do anything about the own goal. Great header to save the day.
Kevin Nicholson: 7/10 Looked shaky at the beginning but improved well, great deliverers in the second half.
Courtney Cameron: 7/10 Reminded me of Mustapha Carayol in the first half with some great runs and pieces of skill. Didn't get into the game in the second half though.
Lee Mansell: 7/10 I say this every time but typical Mansell performance. Got stuck in very well and put 100% into it. Didn't have a great affect going forward though.
Ben Harding: 8/10 Impressive debut from Harding. Great in the air, good on the ball and very strong.
Billy Bodin: 5/10 Usual inconsistent performance from Bodin. He does some great footwork but then produces a poor delivery. Did get stuck in quite well though.
Callum Ball: 6/10 Had one good shot and did some good build up play but most of the game quite quiet.
Elliot Benyon: 7/10 Great work rate unlucky not to score in first half. Good performance from him.
Subs:
Jordan Chappell: 7/10 Did one great run and almost found the back of the net. Hope he starts at Swindon.
Niall Thompson: 7/10 Perfect cross for equaliser. Hope Knill brings him on earlier against Swindon.
Karl Hawley: 6/10 Did some good stuff when he came on didn't really see enough of him to decide see if he can make a good impact this season.
Subs not used: Damon Lathrope, Thomas Cruise, Conor Thompson, Daniel Sullivan.
