A reference by Mike Green about hearing the 3rd Round FA Cup draw immediately after beating AP Leamington in the 2nd Round.
Ah, so the draw wasn't always at 12.30 on the following Monday. That particular occasion may have been an "experiment" but I clearly remember seeking out a TV shop in Leamington to learn our fate.
And the 3rd Round proved to be a pisser with all those postponements up at Newcastle. I never made it when the game was eventually played.
As for the identity of Santa.
Alan Mer son?

Did anyone on here actually go to that game at Newcastle in January 79. If i remember it was midweek and im not sure we even took a coachload but i could be wrong. I only remember watching the shakey Westward tv highlights of Les Lawrence nodding in our goal on the local news the next evening.

I believe the original Saturday fixture was postponed as early as the Thursday because of snow. I was doing a course in Nottingham at the time and my intention was to return there after Christmas/New Year and travel to Newcastle and back in a day. Instead I vaguely remember seeing a game at Leicester. I'm sure our game at Newcastle was postponed at least once more before being played midweek a full ten days after the scheduled date. It must have been a great disappointment to many people not to have made it to the game. Anybody who got there from South Devon would have done extremely well.

It was almost impossible to get from Chelston to Plainmoor.

The snow had arrived in South Devon on the Saturday evening a week before the scheduled game at Newcastle. I'd been to Bristol City v Manchester City, in the old First Division, and the snow was thick on the ground when we arrived back at Newton Abbot. There were then no trains to Torquay for a good two or three hours. It was probably the most snow I've seen in Torquay since 1963.
Leicester v Norwich on the day we should have been at Newcastle. Those were the days when Leicester had an inflatable pitch cover at Filbert Street. Did Keith Weller wear tights that day? I think he did.

Quiz time: What links Newcastle's and Torquay's goalkeepers in that cup tie?

Both played for Chesterfield.

Well done, Timbo. Looks like we've been around the block on that one already. Both 'keepers played for Chesterfield but has Felix got something else up his sleeve about them? Dirt perhaps?
That's a pretty ordinary-looking Newcastle side presided over a by board that, even by local standards, was desperately unpopular. I bet SJP could be a rather sour place in those days.
A column by Arthur Appleton. I'm sure someone can name his famous book about football in the North East.

That's the one. Written over fifty years ago now and one of those books often mentioned in magazines and other books when I was doing my first football reading. The title of the book aided the mythology that the North East of England produced the most footballers and showed the greatest enthusiasm for the game. Anywhere. Not saying it did; not saying it didn't. But that was the "hotbed" image that the region loved and actively promoted. Years later, in the 1990s, Harry Pearson wrote a slightly different book about the North East called "The Far Corner". This is a more off-beat, humorous account of a year spent watching games all over Northumberland and Durham. A little dated now but still worth a read.
