JamesB and Barton Downs are obviously a pair of railway enthusiasts given last night's contributions to the New Where Is This Ground thread. Spurred on by their knowledge of Long Eaton and its history of goods and passenger services I did a count today and as far as I can tell there are 27 extant stations in Derbyshire.
These 27 include Sinfin North, Sinfin South and Pear Tree (for the Baseball Ground) serving Derby only, and Tutbury & Hatton which only just scrapes in by virtue of being 200 yards or so inside Hatton, Derbyshire, rather than Tutbury, Staffs. Then there is New Mills Newtown which is even closer yet to the border with Cheshire.
However, the Derbyshire road map tells us that the county still possesses 4 Station Lanes, a Station New Road, 6 Station Streets, a Station Close, a Station Hill, a Station Drive and a Station View, 4 Station Approaches and 56 Station Roads. Clearly Beeching and his axe have a lot to answer for.
Over to you buffs for the definitive list of defunct Devon railways, please, but only when you get home from the Gillingham match, obviously.

Actually making a list of former Devon railway lines and stations would have entertained me rather more this evening than Sheffield United v Walsall.
Wasn't there a Ramsline Halt next to the Baseball Ground?

It was indeed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsline_Halt_railway_stationBoothferry Park and Vicarage Road both formerly had one, and Old Trafford still does. Also Bordesley station wouldn't still be open but for being next to St Andrew's - it's mostly used on match days

Mike Oakley's book about Devon's railway stations says there were once 237 of them in the county. Now there are just sixty; fourteen of these on private lines.
Wildebeeste would like some names. Here's a few. But where are they and on which lines?
Ashwater; Billacombe; Chelfham; Dousland; East Anstey; Ford; Gara Bridge; Hole; Ingra Tor; Kenwith Castle; Liddaton Halt; Mount Pleasant Road Halt; Newton Poppleford; Oreston; Pullabrook Halt; Roundball Halt; Snapper Halt; Tower Hill; Up Exe Halt; Wingfield Villas Halt; Yeo Mill Halt.

I'm assuming this isn't just for Wildebeeste to answer:
- Billacombe was on the line from Plymouth to Yealmpton
- Dousland and Ingra Tor were both on the Princetown Railway (Yelverton to Princetown)
- Chelfham and Snapper Holt were on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
- Gara Bridge was on the South Brent to Kingsbridge line
- Hole was on the line between Torrington and Halwill
- Ford is on the GWR line out of Plymouth in the Devonport area
- Mount Pleasant Road Halt was on the way out of Exeter on the LSWR line towards Yeovil and Salisbury, near St James Park station
- Newton Poppleford was on the line to Sidmouth, Budleigh and Exmouth
- Oreston was on the Turnchapel Branch in Plymouth
- Up Exe Halt was on the line from Stoke Canon to Tiverton
I've got that Oakley book at home. It's very good. However, the best resource is Colonel Cobb's historic British railway atlas which plots all the lines and stations of the British railway network onto a 1960s OS map

Thanks for rescuing me there, James.
A disused railway line is a sad thing but the strangest case of all must, of course, be Dartmouth, where the station was built in expectation of Brunel's line that never arrived.
That must make Dartmouth station unique in the UK. Unless someone knows differently, that is?

Don't worry, James, it's an open quiz.
And if anybody wants to go out and take pictures of those old stations.....

Funny you should mention that, Barton. Anyone up for a thread of pictures of still-standing old railway buildings? I only ask because that pesky new phone of mine snapped Heeley Station this afternoon as I was driving out of Sheffield.

That bridge can be found on this thread and also on this thread is what is left of the Kingsbridge station. torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=fansphoto&action=display&thread=5604I have put up already on this thread three links about parts of the Primrose line I have walked etc there is one part I did not put up where I went seaching for the bridges that took the line over the river Pym. I think there is still one bridge out of the nine ? ( I think that’s how many there were) I have yet to find, but many of the rest of them can be seen on this thread that I did not put up torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=fansphoto&action=display&thread=6050I have also walked most of the line from Plymouth to Yealmpton and put up up the link to half of that walk ( it’s the Shaugh tunnel one, but on this thread you can see another part of the line complete with three wonderful viaducts. torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=fansphoto&action=display&thread=6811I have also walked some of the old Princetown line and that report can be read on this link torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=fansphoto&action=display&thread=5861Thanks for rescuing me there, James. It is sad so many good lines were closed down, but the good news is so many are still there and can be walked alone. They are great and there is nothing better than walking through a dark long tunnel, or walking high up over a viaduct. I have plans to walk some more lines as and when I have the time. I will also put on one post soon all the pictures I have taken of old stations etc.

Here's one to get you in the mood, Dave This is Heeley Station, on Chesterfield Road, Sheffield, closed in the 60s (or maybe the 70s). The local MP was Frank Hooley, giving rise to the immortal election slogan "Hooley for Heeley."

James certainly knows his railways and is absolutely spot on in identifying those Devon railway stations I lifted from Mike Oakley's wonderful book.
And, sticking to the alphabetical approach, here's some more. Information and pictures gratefully received:
Albert Road Halt, Britannia Halt, Coldharbour Halt, Dunsbear Halt, Elburton Cross, Filleigh, Horrabridge, Ide, Kings Tor Halt, Longdown, Maddaford Moor Halt, North Tawton, Ottery St Mary, Petrockstowe, Richmond Road Halt, Steer Point, Tipton St Johns, Uffculme, Watergate Halt, Yarde Halt.
Should you be looking for a rather different railway walk I'd suggest an urban exploration around Devonport seeking out abandoned stations, cuttings, viaducts and tunnels. I introduced Chelston and Jon to some of these features when we last played at Home Park. They best be warned that there's a possibility I may be down for this year's fixture.
